Horns is based on a type of play where there is a double on ball screen for the pg ( on pick either side), with a good pg, this can be a bitch to defend, we are playing a team in 2 weeks which run this for their pg, who is very good..(for more info on horns, PM me)
thumbs can be alot of different plays.. we run a thumbs down adn a thumbs up..

Basically mate these things are just names for set plays. They aren't standard things and my team's version of thumbs might be called special or red or magic.....whatever.....by someone else.
There's a whole group of words that have become generic for basketball plays. Thumbs, horns, fist, high, low,up,special, regular, hand ,shirt........so on and so forth. They don't always mean the same thing......they're just words that are easy to remember and signal.

Thanks very much to all that answered and gave their time so generously. :)
I feel almost guilty that I only posted this as a bit of a joke in honour of Gordie McLeod!
Almost......
The most I expected was a single reply of "lol!"
But that site is good!

I've seen the term "Pass Around the Horn" used rarely also. I think it's a baseball term when they pass from 1st through to 3rd base. In basketball I think the Horn to mean the Point guy in a 1-2-2 type allignment, and thought "Horns" probably meant the wings spots. Can anyone clarify?
I think the Pigs Horns was running cutters off two guys standing on the wing.
As CP said, these are just things they can call using a hand signal (hopefully one handed so the PG can dribble). Just occasionally they use terms based on what the play actually looks like on the court, or on paper.
in our mens aba team in gladstone.. the pg would signal hawks with both arm (flapping) while dribbling.. rather impressive when there was ball pressure on him
