What do coaches do differently. Why are the teams there so strong.
Can you see the other states catching them? If so, which ones.

The same thing that makes Victoria so good at AFL....so many more people play and therefore the chance of finding good players is much greater.

So it's a numbers thing. So it's not really a credit to the coaches as it is a better pool of available players.
Why are there so many kids playing BB over other sports?

Because the weather is so crap that indoor sports are more attractive

Its a numbers thing with coaches as well. More coaches = better chance of good coaches I guess.

Unfortunately I'd guess there aren't its just a result of Victoria's sports basketball participation possibly being greater than other states and a bit of what Stumps said haha.
If we think a heap of kids are choosing basketball over other sports we are sadly kidding ourselves.

Uh, aren't two of the top three prospects to the NBA from SA?
Mr Schenscher and Mr Newley, and we only have 1 mill people.
Maybe the topic should be "What puts the rest of Australia in SAs shadow and why do they all hate us in the NBL... with the salary cap and the Damon Lowery... and so forth."

Yeah but as a general rule, the Vics dominate the Australian basketball scene. Look at the Olympic team and it is full of Vic juniors such as Heal, Smith, Saville, Ronaldson, Bogut
Go to any national championships or look through the history of national championships and the Vics will have done it best. There week to week competition is strong due to good coaching and a larger population base.

Whatever......I can only speak for myself personally but I just dont like Brett Maher. I thought he was awesome at the OLympics and should have played more but I generally dont like his game. [/quote]

These two guys combined (ok maybe if they had Newleys style of play in Schenscher's body...)don't have the NBA potential of Bogut (Vic).

That was a joke, the second half up there ^^^.
And other than Bogut, who recently.
All those guys you named are starting to get on in years...
A few things,
some states dont play in a weekly league.. ala north queensland..
also in regional centres there isnt always alot of good coches..
for instance i was in mackay last eyar, i really only thought there was one decent junior coach, he had great ideas, and could teach very well, he was good motovator, but because there was no one for him to learn from in the program he wasn't very educated basketball wise....
i would confidently say the Worst rep coach at Dandenong would be better than the 2nd best coach at Mackay....
I tinhk in city areas there are better caoches around, and more people learn from them, and then more people learn form the people that learnt from the better coaches..
so coaches education is much better, so the players learn more.
There is so much talant in north queensland, but only townsville and cairns are really developing it well..
(yes a good prospect came out fo rocky, stevie weigh)

Its been the culture for years, some players or even families are now 2nd generation, the big boom thru the 70s & 80s were huge.
The state league is divided into 2 conferences of 10 in each and the competition is @ a high standard played weekly & i would have to agree with Expertise the coaches are @ a high level.

I think it is because Victoria in general is closer together than other states.
Apart from Melbourne, you have Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo not that far away from Melbourne, so they can receive a better standard of education and guidance from Basketball Victoria.
Compare that to say WA, apart from the Perth Metro area, Mandurah and to an extent Bunbury, all the other bigger regional areas are 4-7 hours drive away, not to mention the bigger towns way up north, thats a 10-14 hour drive alone.
The ITC programs do help to an extent, but continual contact and guidance by the State body and it's coaches are paramount.
