I used to be a 1A in a previous life. Then my eyesight improved,I got some people skills and a personality and decided I'd like to have some friends apart from other refs..............................so I became a coach.

1A... well, before I stopped for the HSC. Now I just don't bother anymore.
I wanted to do some more coaching, other than just training the little dudes and coaching (like 12 teams) from under 6s to under 16s, but once again.. I quit before I got the chance. Now I don't even play. I'm so deprived.

What does the 'test' consist of? What are the benchmarks?

I gathered that much but was just wondering how 'fast' are we talking since some refs you see around don't look all that fit.
If I didn't have anger management issues, I'd like to ref.
I can only imagine how I'd act if some smart arse made a comment towards my reffing within earshot. Can you spell tribunal? :D :D

The AIS beep test which we did this year involved running 86 x 20 metre laps in 10 minutes (i.e. 1.72km).
No sweat...well, actually a little sweat, but not till the last 2 minutes. 8)

Whats the new test like sd fair few from my association passed. Ill look forward to doing it in future years. By the way i cant see why women only have to do 68 laps when they referee the same games as the men ????

Oh CP, you forgot to mention you also had a frontal labotomy and lost all comprehension of advantage/disadvantage when one of your teams is involved in the contest.

I can't see that reason either - but that's the way it is and unfortunately the powers-that-be don't look like changing it.
As for "how's the new test?" - pretty damn easy for a fit man like me  8)

LOL! You call that hard?
The standard military test comprises of 2.4km in 10 minutes. (14.4km/hr). That's only 10.3 km an hour......fast walking/jog on the spot pace!!!

The military one is a run, also, not 20 metre laps, but still, covering 1.72km inside 10 minutes is nothing spectacular.
I'd like to see some of the older refs doing it though

Level 3 is very much alive and well but I don't know of anyone being awarded a Level 4 for around 10 years although many have been awarded their L5 FIBA. They just skip L4 I spose.

Off the top of my had, Lucas Carey, Ross Wignell and Patty Hunt are level 3's. You should probably contact basketball victoria. That is if you live in victoria.
I have reffed once in a school basketball game and that was enough for me, It was a hard lesson and ever since then i have had a completely different understanding for the refs. I Don't yell at them anymore and it's easier to handle bad calls now. When i did it i was so overwhelmed and there was so much to think about and it really takes alot to be even a domestic ref. So good on you to all the refs out there having yelling juniors on your case!!!!

Oh and btw, the beep test is BLOODY Hard. (unless you have the time to run 200+ kilometres a week like some other Ref's I know)

As part of playing in the comps I've played in over teh years, they make you do duty. If you're lucky, you'll get a reasonably competent ref to partner the real ref. If not, you'll get the real ref making calls from half way just to try and keep control of the game!
But, over the years in comps I've played in, they've tried different things like mixing up what grade you ref for. It always used to be the grade you played in - you know, you play then you do duty the next game. But one year our association decided that it would be a good idea for us to not ref our own grade (when I was in B grade at the time). So we got the A grade. You blink or look away and guaranteed that there'd be a collision and it was like "Damn, who had postion?, ... I haven't got a %^&** clue..." and they were palying for sheep stations (even the A grade women!) so you'd get abused no matter what call you made. Then, anohter time we had to ref D grade men. They all thought they were Jordan and were soooooo good (I was still playing B grade so I knew I was better!) and tehy also played like for sheep stations. But either they were clumsy and boofy as and didn't really know the rules or they were old blokes on their way down and jsut didn't get there in time. But none of this stopped them arguing!
Then, one comp, we reffed B grade women. These were palyers who were good. Almost as good as A grade (either A grade players who weren't really into training or were a bit older or girls on their way up) and they were waaaaaay better than D grade men. BUT, they didn't play for sheep stations. If you made the occasional bad call, they accepted it and played on. They actually made reffing enjoyable!
Now I play again and ref in C grade. But I'm older (see earler paragraph - I'm on my way down - hehe!) but I do know the rules a bit better than i used to . So, I'm a bit more confident now and I can tell the other old guys to pull their heads in and same with the young guys (who know sqaut!).
So, like you, Steph, I do have a better understanding of the refs. But that doesn't stop me letting the refs know when they have made a bad call!

The beep test is sh!t easy rusty as long as you have a smidgen of basic fitness and do a little training over the summer instead of drinking too much pi$$.
I'm not as young as I used to be. I think it was reffered to in another thread as 30+++++++++++ ........
I am no longer a greyhound, far from it actually, but I do manage to run 25 - 30km a week from September to Feb when we do the test, I ease off a bit during the season, and pass with ease. I do enjoy watching the younger refs roll up at the tryout day, big noting themselves, and then drop out and rush to a bin before throwing up after failing at the 6-7 minute mark
And mate, you don't have to be Steve Monagetti or Ray Hunt to graduate from 1A to 2A. Sh!t, thats only domestic A grade to Junior Panel.

Hey Homer ... I have only thrown up after failing once and that was at the 5 minute mark.
Some do find it easier than others. We had an SEABL referee pull out at the 8 minute mark this year but I know others who can push it up around 16-17 mark (and they aren't all that young anymore).

Don't know exactly how far people can go now days "Randy"
(I can't help but chuckle every time I see your nic mate, it so suits you)
Here in Vic they stop the tape/CD as soon as the 11 minute mark is reached. Back in the old Albert Park days I remember Ray getting to about 16 minutes on crt 9. All the other refs had formed a lane on either side of him and were cheering him on. I also remember another ref by the name of Max Berriman getting to around the same mark before Neil B stopped him as he still needed to run the suicides.

We have had many referees achieve the standards previously associated with a Level 4 (Australian Badge) referee. It seems that level 4 doesn't seem to carry the same prestige these days.

It does for me Rev as I'm damn sure I won't be getting an L5. I'd love to be awarded the highest possible grading for me and if that was an L4 then so be it.
