A while back, I made a post on here and another forum about getting my hands on old NBL game tapes but didn't have much luck.

I have been looking around unsuccessfully for old NBL game tapes. Being an old Magic/Titans fan, I have particularly been looking for the NBL Grand Finals series of 92 and 96 on tape and also that epic overtime match between the Tigers and Titans where blood was spilt everywhere. With so many NBL fans on this board, I know someone out there has copies of these games or any other NBL games at home somewhere. If anyone can help me out, could you please post what you have on here. I am sure other people are also interested in what games people have in their archives.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks heaps.

I have all the Wildcats grandfinals on video but they're in storage so to find the box they are in would be like finding a needle in a hay stack.
Maybe one day i'll dig them out.

Hello all,
This is my first post, so forgive me if I ramble.
I have over 60 separate game videos ranging from 1992 to 2005. Most of the games involve either the Kings or Razorbacks.
I do own, however, some Boomers and Opals games from Atlanta and Sydney.
On an official note, as Official Historian of Basketball Australia (appointed in July) I am looking for any tapes of games you may have involving Australian rep teams (Boomers, Opals, Crocs, Gems etc.) We would borrow them for a short time to make DVD copies to add to our collection.
Personally, if any body knows someone or has copies of the Australia-USSR series from 1987 or 88. I would be very interested in hearing from you.
I can be reached at Nicholas.Way@basketball.net.au

It doesn't help most of you... but I have been told the AIS video library has 1000's of basketball games, including every Boomers game for the last 30 years. If you get membership there you can watch games there or hire.

Anfield,
Would be particularly interested in recieving copies of the 'Dream Team' run in Barcelona.
BA already has a DVD Copy of Dream Team vs Lithuania in its archive and I am certain that we would be pleased to add the rest to our collection.
As to the Boomers games, BA already has all of those games in its archive (it is one of the benefits of working for Australia's governing body). We recieve all those automatically.
In relation to another poster's mention of the AIS library, the National Sports Information Centre has a large basketball collection. I am looking into the possibility of having BA join as a corporate member (if we are not already).
One final thought: Take the time to spread the word. The basketball community knows that we are working on this project, but I would like to see the fan's perspective in our work as well.

Will we all have access to the BA collection?

Anfield

Doesn't the trade of footage recorded off the TV present copyright issues particularly for non-private bodies such as BA?

Archivist
23-10-2007, 02:52 PM
I want to make clear that any trades that I may engage in will be in a private capacity. Such tapes will also be from MY OWN holdings, as BA's are not available for sale or trade
Further, there are no plans to allow public access to BA's archive.
Before any agreements are reached, however, I will consult with my fellow employees and ask their advice.

OK, inspired by this thread I have now finished converting the following tapes to DVD:

- 1995 Grand Final Game 3 (Wildcats - North Melbourne)
- 2000 Grand Final Games 1 & 2 (Wildcats - Titans)
- "Wildcats Back to back" tape 1: 1990
- "Wildcats Back to back" tape 2: 1991 (these consist of a brief highlights package of each year's quarter/semi finals, with extended highlights of the deciding grand final games)

PM me with your mailing details if you're interested in a copy.

Just bumping this thread in the hope that new users might be able to help me out.

As previously mentioned, I am looking for old Magic/Titans game tapes. In particularly the grand finals of 92 and 96 and also the Titans Tigers derby on 20/11/99. If anyone has any of these tapes lying around the house and is able to help me out, I'd love to hear from you. I'd be happy to pay for dubbing costs and more for your trouble as well.

Thanks.

PS, if anyone has old NBL game tapes that they are happy to share, feel free to post what you have on here. I am sure that there are others on this board that would be interested to know what you have in your collection.

Dunkin' Dan
06-02-2008, 11:35 AM
Definitely!!

Video tapes degrade over time and I would love to preserve some more to DVD, both for my own collection and to share (DVD's are so much cheaper & easier to copy & post than tapes!).
In particular, the more "significant" games like NBL grand finals and international games, plus any other memorable Cats games, would be what I'm after.

I recently transferred the "USA @ AUS" games (the matches played in Melbourne just prior to the Sydney 2000 olympics) - both Boomers & Opals - to DVD. Quality is pretty decent on these. If anyone is interested in a copy PM me.

Hope someone here can help you out, Anfield.
Surely there are some folks here with some Magic/Titans stuff in their collections.

Or you can just logon and idle on their IRC channel:

You can earn upload credit by hanging out on our IRC channel! We are giving out 1.25MB free upload credit for every 5 minutes you're on our channel!

3 days logged in and you've got a free game. There's also "freeleech" games like the 2005 NBL All Star game.

Wallitron is right - I'm a member and get heaps of "stuff" from there (I presume we're allowed to talk about this so long as we don't link those things starting with T or instruct anybody on how to obtain those things starting with T).

EPL, old school NBA, NBL, the place has it all, and at good rates due to the membership system. I maintain a 3.0 ratio, its not that hard so long as you're on a good plan with good speed (me Iinet ADSL2).

I plan to upload some old NBL games from VHS once I get round to figuring it out. My collection is mostly the 1994 season and some finals games between then and 1991. Hopefully they still work.

In return I can offer: The 1990 NBL All Star Game(converted to DVD)

Season Highlights of 1991 and 1994

Really Rare Michael Jordan/Bulls stuff including playoff games and Noth Carolina Games. A good one for example I have(on disc) is the 1986 playoff game vs the Celtics that went to double overtime where he scored 63.

I may be able to help you with the 94 4OT game when I get round to uploading my colllection of VHS (not sure how to do it exactly).

Anfield
28-03-2008, 04:19 PM
I copy old VHS tapes to DVD using my DVD recorder. The quality of the DVD can only be as good as the quality of the VHS albeit negligibly worse. But to the human eye, it's the same as the source VHS.

Dunkin' Dan
28-03-2008, 05:36 PM
Yeah, and for that reason it's important to use a good quality VCR when doing the conversion. For fast-motion stuff like sport it's also important to find the optimum match of recording quality on the DVD recorder for the time of the recording, to minimise compression artifacts - i.e. use up as much of the disc as possible.

The most important factor though is the quality of the original recording.
Poor TV reception, poor-quality video tapes, recording in long play, recording using a mono or poor-quality VCR, poor storage of tapes and the passage of time can all make the recording less watchable.
That's why I'm spewing that I was never a hoarder of games, because I've always been blessed with good VCRs, lived in areas with good reception and used good tapes. The few games I have kept made for quite watchable DVDs.

I have the 97 grand final game 3 on VHS. I will look at converting.

I have a bunch of NBL and NBA games on DVD and VHS.

Djmenow sent me the 95 season review, which I converted to DVD.

I have the NBL '91 Season review on VHS, The Wildcats '91 season review "Hunters to Hunted", The wildcats '90 & '91 back to back VHS.

I'll make a list.

I know I have a 96 game Magic vs Wildcats in Melbourne, where Litchi hits that left handed leaner!

I'm really after games 1 & 2 from the 1990 grand final, games 1 & 2 from the 1991 grand final, games 1, 2 & 3 of the 1993, games 1 & 2 of the 1995 series, and any pre 1990 wildcats games.

illusiv
28-03-2008, 07:11 PM
yeah thats the issue I have. I have a panasonic DVD revcorder, which has 3 modes for recording. 1 hour, 2 or 4 hours.

As games go for 2-2.5 hours, it makes it hard. If I use the 4 hour record, it's pixelated, and looks crap in fast moving scenes. If I use the 2 hour one, it's fine, but then won't fit on 1 DVD.

Ooh, that's a bummer.
I can choose the quality in 10 minute increments, which makes things pretty easy.

The other obvious advantageous thing to have is a DVD recorder with a hard drive. As well as making it easier to watch, editing out the ads saves more space (= better quality).
Most NBL games will fit into 2 hour mode once the 10-12 minutes of ads are eliminated.

No, I haven't done it that way.
I've got a USB capture device that can do it, but I tend to only use it for small clips like the ones I post here. Not sure how it compares to the video quality of my DVD recorder.

If anyone has games on VHS (Wildcats preferred, but I'm happy to convert any Basketball games), and would like me to convert them to DVD, I'm more than happy to do so. PM me if you would like... I'm really wanting Wildcats games from 87-1991 reg season / finals, but anything else you might have.

I'll keep updating this thead of games as I convert more and more.. I still have about 30-40 VHS tapes of my own at home to go through and convert.

Cheers,

Firstly I must say Illusiv is a legend!

I do have more videos but unsure what they are as don't have aVHS player anymore. Will borrow the folks when holidays commence and see if I can add to the list. I only gave Illusive about 1/2 of the videos I have.

I know most of them are wildcats games, but may have one of the magic/tigers GFs.

Heheh Thanks Wildscooby, sorry about the length of time it's taken me to do them though!

If you want, I'm happy to do the rest of the VHS tapes you have... I've got it all setup now, and the process works easily... it took me a long time, and alot of hours with testing and burning to get the end result!

OK, I have finally finished encoding all the VHS games that WildScooby game be on VHS to my computer. Now it's just a matter of converting from MPEG to DVD.

Each game will fit on a Dual Layer DVD. They can be shrunk to a Single Layer, but it really looses quality.

This is the list of games that I have converted from WildScooby, and I still have my own collection to do!

This thread has died down in the past couple weeks. Anyone else able to help me out here?
I haven't forgotten the promises made some time ago - just haven't had the time to go through the tapes.

That AUS-USSR series was an interesting one. We didn't win a game, but that was the one where Drewie hit a 3 at the buzzer in the 6th Test at the Glasshouse to send the game into overtime, and uttered a line about really feeling like a Whopper in the change rooms straight after the game. May have earnt the NBL-Hungry Jacks sponsorship on the back of that one statement!

The AUS-USA pre-Olympic event was the one in Salt Lake City with the infamous faceoff between Barkley and Heal.

I should have most of the Grand Finals involving the Sixers, and a few World Championship snippets.

Got one almost entire game from 1986, the USSR-Yugoslavia semi-final, where the Yugos blew a 9 pt lead insude the last couple of minutes to lose. Fantastic game from the predominantly Baltic-powered Soviets.

Sorry to repeat myself (I already mentioned this via PM), but you could convert them to a more accessible format (.avi, .mp4) via Nero or similar software. You should be able to get it down below 2GB per game.

Don't think it's OT, but Falcons win on a Pat Reidy jumper, and Vlahov missed a layup at the buzzer from point blank range that would have won it.

Hey Guys,

as Ive had a few requests, Im in the process of sorting through my collection of game tapes and making a list of what Ive got. Most of the games are in very good quality on VHS.

I trial copied Game 1 of the 1991 GF series to disc and the quality was excellent, so once I get the list out, feel free to PM any requests U have, or if you're after a specific game, or team/year/player, let me know now and I can start copying as I go. The list is pretty large as I have games going back to 1989. Alot of NBL Allstar games and Finals/Grand Final games, aswell as regular season matches throughout this time, so hopefully have the list asap.

I always used to look at the 1995+ games as being part of the more 'recent' games on tape, but its now 14 years gone.

Would be good to have people who arent Wildcats fans on this thread to get a more varied compilation going.

The most time consuming thing is when I do put a game on to see whats on the tape, I tend to get stuck watching the majority of the game =D

The last quarter of Grand Final Game 1 in Sydney 2003 is also very difficult to watch.

Apart from the obvious, I think 1993 was the best season in terms of being the most memorable for mine.

Yes it was a close second for mine. Heal's 5 point play was abosolute BS. Ultimately I was able to come to terms with that loss though as the Kings were the better team that season (see Game 2 and their 2-1 split overall). In '93 however we were 21-5 for the year (vs. 16-10 for the Tigers) and got reffed out of the second half of Game 1 in Melbourne.

'95 for me. I think we won something like 6 games that came down to the last shot that season.

Can anyone please tell me where I could find any videos or DVD's of any games in the Grand Final series in the Kings threepeat seasons.

The one thing that was a major bugbear of mine even before the Kings died was that there wasn't a DVD set of the threepeat.

Considering it remains one of the only threepeats in NBL history you would think that there would be a DVD of it.

I am still on the lookout for old Magic/Titans game tapes in particularly the grand finals of 92 and 96 and also the Titans v Tigers derby on 20/11/99. Once I get a DVD copy of some games, I intend to convert them into .avi then upload to either RapidShare or Hotfile.

Would it be appropriate to post those links here or at least advertise that I have said links (with a view to PM'ing the links)?

I know there is a rule against t0rrents.

I want to share the joy but don't wanna get booted, the thing is its clear what people are doing already, just only it requires physical changing of hands Vs digital sharing.

Thoughts appreciated.

I'm currently scanning slides and negs from 1986 for the Hawks and I have one undated set. It is Hawks vs Westars at the Snakepit and it looks like the Hawks won 98-97. I did some searching on the net and I think the result was disputed and the game replayed later in the season. I believe it was the second game of the season and sometime in May.
I didn't know what thread to put this in, hopefully someone knows the answer.

Any of the people who posted in this thread still offering games?

I'm after:
1990 Grand Final
1991 Grand Final
1995 Grand Final
2000 Grand Final
the whole series for those four, including any losses the Wildcats incurred

Bullets-Wildcats from '94 (4OT)
Wildcats-Giants EF G2 '93
Tigers-Titans 20/11/99
The game where Vlahov set That Screen on Mark Dickel

Any of the sellers want to set up iOffer accounts? There's only the one guy on there I've found so far selling NBL DVDs.

I don't have PMs yet, but my IM and email address are both available in my profile, or you could post a link to an iOffer store here if you have one, I guess.

I'm also after any other good games, including non-Wildcats games, and games where the Wildcats lose. I'm a fan of the game first and any given team second. Only started following the league in 99/00 (the grand final was the third or fourth game I ever went to), so I've never seen a lot of the older players and obviously won't remember any of the great games that took place even a couple of years after that season.

Games involving Leroy Loggins, Larry Sengstock, Bradtke-Copeland-Gaze, Mark Davis, Darnell Mee, Brett Maher, and any other players in that vein in their primes would also be appreciated.

IMO we are better off converting these to avi files (or equivalent) and sharing via a bittorrent using a private tracker (which shall remain nameless). A lot easier to distribute that way, and just as illegal. If I had the time I'd convert my collection. DD has my tape of that 94 Quad OT game, so may be able to help you out.

This is probably a long shot - but would anyone have on the tape the entire match between the Kings and Crocs, from season 2000/2001 when Rose hit the 3 on the buzzer to win? It was the second last game of the season if I recall - so sometime in late March 2001 and was televised on FOX.

Alternatively, I'd be very interested in any games featuring Pat Reidy? :D

S-S already has an NBL section, though it's just recent games. I'd certainly consider uploading anything if I had it, because uploads don't count towards my quota, but others may not have the same arrangement and games do have to sit on the drive for that to be feasible.

The problem with these in my experience is that as they are from VHS and analogue, they are very large in size due to the frame rate that VHS used. Most of mine convert to about 10-13gb per game. I haven't taken the adverts out, as I have that many!

I do try to base my follow-up harassment on how often people are online. Tried a follow-up PM the other day, and his box was full, so that's also an option, depending on what else is in there that needs dealing with.

The fact that I'm ridiculously keen to get my hands on a game I've been looking for for the past 11 years is not helping me to be patient, however.

Edited to clarify: he has responded since posted in this thread a day or two ago, we had another back-and-forth, and I've gone in his 'not-right-now' pile again.

Anyhow. So as to comply with hellcat's request/order, the on-topic portion of this post:

He has a couple of non-Sixers things listed at the bottom, and obviously the Sixers play other teams, so people outside SA could well find items of interest. He also has an iOffer store.

Ordered the '86 Grand Final from him a couple of days ago. Hasn't arrived yet, though, so I can't comment on the quality.

That screen. Not sure which year it was, though I think Mitsubishi were gone by 02, so it's unlikely to be that. Uniforms make it post-2000, so it's likely to be 00-01. Wild 1 has two Cats-Titans games from that year, though hasn't got back to me yet with whether or not either of them are the game in question.

I don't know if anything of note as you put it occured. It is the same year and the same teams, and the fact that you put Wildcats vs Titans infers it was a Wildcats home game, which the game I have is, but the youtube clip is actually Titans vs Wildcats.

'Implies', not 'infers'. The speaker implies, the listener infers. Sorry, pet peeve.

Anyhow, guess I just wandered into Wild 1's habit of listing the 'Cats first. The game shown in that clip is the one I meant. I really know nothing about it except that screen, and that screen is about the only pre-2003 memory I have of the NBL (the only ones from then to 2005, from which point I have games on DVD, are the 2003 Grand Final and that 25-point lead the 'Cats gave up to the 36ers at Challenge in the playoffs, which obviously interest me far less).

The '86 Grand Final just showed up, so I'm going to go watch that. I'll let everyone know what the quality is like when I'm done, if anyone is interested in purchasing from the link I provided earlier.

I have a USB capture device, and plug my VCR into that. It takes as long as the game itself to capture it as an AVI file which is about 10gb. I then run it through a conversion program to make it DVD files, which also makes it fit on a dual layer DVD. That takes about 1 hour. Then burn the disc.

It's the only way I have found to get the same quality that the original VHS has. Works well for me, a bit time consuming, but it works.

koberulz
27-05-2011, 12:10 PM
Do I? The name of a device you're using isn't much, is it? And as far as dates and whatnot goes, I have no idea how Wild 1 has labelled and stored his stuff. It could take anywhere from five minutes to several days. The former is reasonable, the latter obviously less so, which is why I asked.

If Wild 1 can get me dates, for 99/00, 00/01 and 01/02 I can get venues and final scores. I'm not exactly opposed to contributing here, I just lack the resources a lot of other people have.

ETA: Just to emphasise this (and continue what has so far been a rather subpar day), I attempted to capture the Wildcats vs Great Mates tape (the only NBL tape I have). The VCR ate it. I managed to get it out of the VCR and back into the cassette, but there's no picture any more when I play it. Even the normally blue default screen is white now, which leads me to believe the tape may be okay but I've screwed the VCR trying to recover it.

Not sure how feasible buying a new one is. Do they even make them anymore?

If anyone's wanting to put any of this season's games on DVD, and gets One through their Foxtel, this (http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html) works really well. Might work with other PVRs, but I can't guarantee that.

You'll need to pick it up from the European store if you want to record in SD, and when capturing 5.1 audio fast-forwarding/rewinding causes the sound to get out of sync. Captured Psych in 1080i HD with 5.1 surround off One the other night, just leaving it to run for the full hour, and the resulting m2ts file imported into Adobe Premiere Pro with no problems whatsoever.

Dunkin' Dan
06-10-2011, 05:04 PM
^ You're still better off keeping everything in the digital domain by recording on a PVR that allows you to export the Transport Stream file (eg. a BeyonWiz) straight to a PC.
Going to analogue and back is only ever going to reduce the quality.
But yeah, if you only get One via Foxtel then that's a nice option.

Destroy it.......I'll make you rich;)

Why would I track down a copy solely to destroy it? That seems inefficient.

Just in case it wasn't clear, that was a request list, not a 'games I own' list. And yes, I realise it's absurdly long and I have little hope of getting all of them. But better to request 50 and get 10 back than whittle it down to 5 and fine out only 1 of them is in anyone else's collection.

Just got several games from illusiv, which I'll be uploading over the course of the next however long it takes. The 4OT Brisbane-Perth game is now up.

I'm chasing any games from the 1991 or 1990 seasons. I have the 1991 grand final series and 1990 games 1 and 3, but I would like:

1991 any reg season games, especially wildcats vs Geelong at pec
1991 semi final series wildcats vs Adelaide
1990 reg season games
1990 elimination series vs tigers
1990 semi finals vs north melb
1990 grand final game 2

If anyone wants these I would be more than happy to convert them from VHS to DVD and supply games in my collection.

Distributing the way koberulz has been would be way more efficient.

Maybe, but you have to get the games first, which he got from me.

The amount of games that I have would take a long time to upload also.

I'm happy to give people games for free if they send me a USB HD (or give it to me at a cats game). I only want payment for DVD's as they obviously cost me and take time to burn etc.....

Efficient for everyone else, perhaps, but not really for the person doing the distributing. Takes time to convert everything, hard drive space to keep it, and a whole lot of upload allowance. My uploads aren't counted against any sort of cap, so I'm in a better position than most people would be with regards to that method of distribution.
