Handle is getting to be too much like Slam ie: too much wanky talk and gibberish.
If Hoopcity is half of what it purports to be, I'll be wrapped.

Still got some love for Handle though. Haven't missed one yet. They try. (is March on sale yet btw? Didn't see it on the weekend)

Will be good to check out a new mag. Hopefully it is worth while, although I would prefer to see a mag devoted mainly to NBL.

i dont think there has been a time in the last 30 years when we have had 2 australian published basketball magazines printed at the same time.
in the 90s we had one on one mag and pbt newspaper. so its good to see the exposure of the sport again, now we need a major fta presence and the sport should roll again along with marketing and team stability

Hey it's not like I made the call to end PBT! :)
By the time PBT finished, I was the only full-time staff member, working from home (didn't even have an office in the ACP building), and the only way the magazine kept going for as long as it did was due to guys like Matt McQuade and Derek working 'for the love of the game' (I love that line and look for any chance I can to use it). There were a few external factors that contributed to PBT's demise, but I won't go into those here to avoid DN any legal ramifications.
Having said that, although I was working at least six days a week and some ridiculous hours, never had more fun in a job than in my PBT days! Even if it seemed I could never satisfy everyone in the ongoing NBL vs NBA and boxscore debates ;) Still, best of luck to anyone starting up any magazine in this current climate, let alone a hoops mag.

Good to have another Aussie basketball magazine out there. I just hope it focuses on NBL as well as NBA. A bit of ABA would be good as well. I just hope it stays away from streetball and too much NBA. Also too much advertising always puts me off buying them.

We are hoping to get the magazines available at local basketball stadiums in every Aussie city. what would be the closest local stadium for you?or it can be purchased online and sent out to your front door, we accept cheque, cash or credit card at hoopcity.com.au As soon as we lock in deals with local stadiums, we will list on our site where the mags will be available. And the mag will be out every 2nd month to begin. First issue is called the April/May edition, next issue will be the June/July edition. Thanks for your questions, if you have any more let us know

Actually if you go to their myspace and check out their blogs it should explain more about the magazine and answer your questions.
one-on-one magazine was the best NBL mag ever made., i've also got the big collection. Does anybody remember "Jammin'" magazine? i've got a few of those lieing around, they were an aussie hoops mag in the 90s. Even though Slam is starting to get a bit messy and lose its print quality, it's still the best hoops mag in the world as far as coverage and insight.
I'm working with a group of us on Hoopcity Mag, the number one intention with the magazine is to promote the sport, it's about giving the NBL and up-and-coming talent media coverage and recognition that would usually go without. Hoopcity is based on the game, from an Australian perspective; stories vary to cover a bit of something for every type of hoops fan as this game is more than one dimensional.
The mags purpose at the end of the day is what most of us are hoping for; getting the game respected in the mainstream and to play a part in filling up seats at NBL games. The more new people Hoopcity can introduce to the game, and the more people that get involved with Hoopcity, the sooner Australia's hoop dreams could come true.
Hoopcity is open-minded, what needs to be promoted and told will be, it's a free-lance hoops mag. If anybody is keen to get involved in any way, drop a message at hoopcity@msfbasketball.com
For the first issue we caught up with D-Mac at his place, he was cool, a real sincere and humble person. the interview went for over an hour so we ended up doing a 7 page interview with him in the mag.
here's an image of a few other articles in the first issue.

Knowledge....
Flashy dunks, sky-high rejections and chest beating celebrations might be his forte
It could be as easy as missing a "not" between celebrations and might.. But even that'd be incorrect as he'd lead the league in chest beating celebrations, Cam was always one of the first to pump the chest and get the crowd into things.
The other thing is all interviews seem so structured with pre-written questions. This is all well and good, but questions can be modified when an interesting answer is given and follow up on that.
Fictional Example:
Q- Whats your typical day
A- Starts weights, then 3 hours training, lunch and rest. When i get a chance im learning the guitar
Q- What about on off days, is it just rest?
A- Well, im trying the learn the guitar. A few of us in the team are thinking of forming a band. We also play a bit of golf for bragging right.
Q- Tell us about being a perenial Boomer.
A - etc.
Perfect chance to ask about who's the best golfer, who's the shanker, who's in the band, what music is the player into...
Get away from the stock standard cliche' interview, most players would probably enjoy that sort of interview more, and it makes for better reading.
Thats my rant anyway.

I gave handle about five or six issues but it refused to improve so that was the end of that. Not into the whole "and1, kickz" rubbish and I dare say marketing to that demographic helps basketball in this country to be seen as a joke.
On a side note I just got myself a 12 month (12 issues) subscription to Alpha, straight to the letterbox for just $15. Now while Alpha is a bit hit and miss at those Uncle Rupert discounted prices it becomes value for money. :)

The reason why I ask re: Handle is for the fact that I do have some involvement and I'll be writing a few articles over the next few issues - I'd like to know what you guys want...you ask me to cover something basketball-related (relevant of course, before TC/jesuc/franny asks me to cover the weird and wonderful) and I'll see what I can do.

I think what Handle has to do (and I guess this Hoopcity) in regards to NBL content is remember that they're the only ones doing it. 'It' being 'NBL promotion' at a national level. You never get anything of any substance anywhere else media-wise, and the NBL proper will probably never do it at all, as most clubs can't/don't. Look around and see what gaps you can fill. Not just standard interviews, look for stuff that will build a bit of hype, show a bit of passion, display more of the personality of the league. One thing that should certainly be done is a bumper NBL season preview edition, one that goes beyond the standard rosters, predictions, quick interviews, yawn yawn. Where will the real passion be found in that season, which are the real great games to look forward to, what's the history or current beef between certain teams, who are the 2 or 3 players from each team to really watch out for etc etc.
Absolutely link the magazine with better online content as well. Eventually it would be great to see it and OzHoops have some sort of connection, create a single destination for NBL fans or potential NBL fans that shows the league as somewhat interesting and well supported. They're not going to find that cruising the official sites. Player blogs, fan blogs, game previews that might make people want to turn up, all the kind of extended features we never get from the media and I assume the NBL/Clubs never have the time or resources to generate themselves. The NBL are amateurs, the media is too quick to 'balance' a compliment with a criticism. Someone has to be looking out for the hype, and I think better extended print articles along with smarter and greater online content under the same brand/umbrella is certainly what the NBL needs and definitely what fans would want.
Personally I get all my NBA needs satisfied online, and really via only a small handful of blogs (eg Truehoop as a sort of daily gateway to everything). I also could not care less for all the And1 type stuff. Essentially I just buy it for the NBL content, and while it is absolutely not at all bad, my first thought is always 'could be so much better'.

Finally got around to reading my copy of Hoopcity (the small size is ideal for reading in the cramped confines of economy class btw :) )
Was a good read. Very nice work by dC & the team. I love what you guys are doing, and the magazine tops it off nicely. In particular, the piece on Hook Williams was great.
Hope it gets well supported.

I just finished reading it too. Enjoyed it and excused the MSF self-congratulations for the first issue :P
I like the breakdown of the different sections, seems to be a good balance. Hopefully the local stories and home grown player profiles continues.

Picked up the first copy. Great read! I think it has great potential. Esp the smaller size creates a kinda JAM feel like back in the 90's. Got through half the magazine & im very excited about the future of Hoopcity. Keep up the great work guys!

I got one sent out and liked it.
my suggestion is catch up with old nba/nbl stars and let us know what they're up to now and talk about the good old days a little.
Thanks for all the support and feedback, we're glad to know people are enjoying it! the response has been great and the next issue is being molded around all the suggestions and feedback with the addition of new contributors, while always being sure to cover a part of all areas of the game, from a local perspective.

there's a good chance we'll be interviewing an ex-phoenix player soon... also it looks like there'll be some big name NBL players in the next Hoopcity issue.
Are either of the two publications available in Brisbane newsagencies?
Hoopcity's not yet available in newsagencies, we're aiming to have it available at the major local stadiums where most fans and players usually visit during the week. in QLD its currently only available at South Districts Spartans stadium, though we're hoping to team up with more associations soon. hopefully as the support grows, the next few issues could be launched through newsagencies.
The buy-online options been busy though, several hundred people have grabbed a copy from the site from all 8 states.

I got mine in the mail box today. Everyone was talking about the size of the mag but I wasn't expecting it to be so small. What is it, A5 size? Content is great and I have enjoyed the parts I have read so far. Nice glossy pages too. Will the buy online remain for future issues?

Is there going to be a subscription type service for those not near an arena etc where they are sold, instead of buying it each time manually via the site when each issue is released?
A list of venues it is available at would clearly be handy, so we don't have everyone asking "Is it avaiable in [insert suburb]?"

Subscriptions will hopefully come soon, most likely by issue 2 or 3 there'll be an option to subscribe for the year. the feedback and support from readers and advertisers will decide how fast things grow.
Who's going to be featured in the next issue?
We can't give any names right now,but we're planning to interview a King from last season, a rising Australian talent, and an ex-NBA legend/All-star.
If you havent yet grabbed your copy of the first issue, you can get it sent to your door from the website, or check out the list of locations it's currently available at. In the weeks ahead, we're working on growing this list.
Thanks for all the great feedback on the first issue, glad everyones enjoying it!

I don't see you criticising 2cs495 or kc4mvp, "Poida" with the fully sick misspelling of an every day name...
I happen to be #5 in my 3 club comps, and it just so happens that a 5 makes a handsome replacement for an S. My favourite basketballer is Allen "The Answer" Iverson, who is #3, and that number sometimes looks like a capital E turned around.

So you could right your name 4n5w37. No, maybe not, it gets a bit confusing even for me, and I suggested it.

With the olympics coming up it might be an idea to do an article on one of the Boomers. As a floor leader, CJ would be a pretty good choice.

Luke Schenscher, Mike Helms, Larry Abney, I don't know why, I think it would be interesting.
Ben Pepper, C.J. Bruton, Chris Anstey, Paul Rogers- I would like to hear about their experiences from being drafted to the NBA in '97.
A lesser known/development player, i.e Erik Burdon, Tom Garlepp, Tyson Demos, to hear what it's like being a development player in the NBL.

Get a player, a fan, and an umpire to view certain incidents, like set plays, team tactics, and umpiring decisions. Let them all pass judgement on what should be the right answers, and then reveal the right answer. Then we'll see who is the smartest of them all.
If there's time, have the player and the fan smash the ref for being a dickhead all his life.

How about an "in-depth" with a couple of players heading to the Paralympic Games.
Get the low-down on the effort required (off-court and on-court) for a disabled player.
I doubt too many OzHoopsters would appreciate the every day challenges in a wheelchair, let alone playing basketball.
Suggestions - Liesl Tesch- Central Coast NSW (longest-serving Australian female player),
and Jessica Pellow from Albury (the youngest player on the team and also a quadriplegic).
Men's side - (the team isn't decided as yet) but Brad Ness (Perth) would be a no-brainer, as he will definitely be in the team and has also just started his own Agency for both wheelchair and able-bodied basketball players and perhaps veteran Brendan Dowler (Wollongong)

From D.C.....
Hoopcity magazine was put on hold due to the lack of advertisers at the time and the state of the NBL was unsure. The mag industry is a tough one especially with Aussie hoops (i.e. Jammin, One on One, PBT and Handle all threw in the towel due to lack of profit). Hoopcity isn't giving up, just took a time-out. We're about to launch the website (online mag) real soon in 2010, and soon enough with enough support, re-launch the magazine. stay tuned with Hoopcity.com.au - DC
