New Zealand
Derrick Alston
Brent Charlton
Orien Green
Ryan Kersten
Kirk Penney
Rick Rickert
Wayne Turner
Mika Vukona
Paora Winitana

Kirk Penney has re-signed for two more seasons.

we've had four imports - Alston, Greene, Rickert and Turner - three of whom have expressed interest in staying (although of course pen has got not been put on paper)

Kersten was signed to a two year-deal?

Not sure of Charleton's status to be honest. Might be surplus to requirements.

Winitana did sign a one-year deal.

And Vukona? Was he only signed to a one-year deal? He'd be a hot FA.

Hawks need to get moving on re-signing if they meet tonights deadline.

They should get Ballinger naturalised and back as an Australian and get import to cover the 3 spot.

Put that together with what they have and gee there going to be competitive.

Also looked at Sydney - didn't Jason Smith sign a five-year deal about two seasons ago?

Or was it just Goorj?

Kendall = King
Smith = King
Worthington = Italy
Draper = King with NBA clause

Blake Borgia
Dontaye Draper
Luke Kendall
Jason Smith
Isiah Victor
Mark Worthington

So the Kings, as of right now are.....
Carter
Tovey
Hinder
Saville
Crosswhite

That's pretty cool.

Blake Borgia is a free agent but Dave Pollard isn't there? Is that because Blake isn't able to be a dev. next season so he automatically goes on the list and Pollard doesn't?

Singapore and South Melbourne simply made their whole team free agents.

You can't sign a five-year deal. Three is the max, which he signed three seasons ago.

im probably way off but would it have something to do with him signing for 1 year therefore continuing into next season?

No, probably just that the list was put together before he was signed.

To quote from an article on the Breakers website posted Jan 19th, 2008:

"Kirk, Phill, Bear, Pauli, Mika, Oscar, Tim, Ryan and Paora will all be back next season, and Wayne and Rick aren’t far behind."

Seems slightly at odds with The NBL's list...

Cant say you would of been the only one , but yes we have adopted Cam-T
He will be another Campbel and Sav for the Hawks now, along with Jackson/Tait/Davidson/Taylor/Kavosy/ etc etc etc

If Daryl Corletto is a free agent does that mean the TIgers can't re-sign him as a 1 again? Be a shame if they have to let DC go..

Pay absolutely no attention to the free agent list - it appears to be yet another work of fiction on the NBL site.

It may be that those players whilst technically FA havent reached agreement with their club. Yet....

Maybe they are waiting to see what their coaches do?

curious

One would imagine that for the 8 clubs in the Finals contracts at this time of season, may not be the highest priority.
Argy bargy over contract details now would be somewhat distracting.
I am not convinced at this stage the coaches are going anywhere.
Most have contracts to fullfill next season and beyond.
The speculation over Goorjian is just that. After all he is the best in the NBL. Why wouldn't the Dragons make a pitch.
Buying BG out of only 1 season of a contract makes perfect business sense than trying to buy out 3 seasons at the Dragons commencement.
But it is just rumour after all.

Stanley

Teams would have for wait for the re-valued player ratings to be released, no?

isaac
05-02-2008, 09:46 PM
That's probably more crucial for anyone rated 3-8 or with loyalty deductions. Teams would probably be fairly safe locking down imports early, I think.

My thoughts exactly Mr bEn. Although I woudn't like to see one of the nbl's foundation clubs go down, i would love to see that guy back with the bullets. He has the goods and would be a very productive guy coming off the bench. He would definitely take alot of pressure of Rychart.

... I thought the rule was that a club couldn't speak to any players until 2 weeks after the season had finished unless the club had given said player their formal blessings to mspeak to other clubs ( ie .... their current club won't be renewing .. so why not let them negotiate elsewhere?)

So what you're saying, in the most round about way possible, is that some of the players on the free agents list aren't technically free agents because the Kings may have alreay made agreements with them so we aren't as screwed as Stumps thinks we are, wow this is a long question?

Sweet.

Right, but teams will start exploring options before this, making indirect contact through agents or whatever.

Free agents listings have never meant anything. Drewey was on the free agent list every year & wasn't going anywhere.
In a brief skim over what's been posted here:
1 .. It's a list of players who may be available, 2 weeks after the season's end.
2 .. A player's team can renegotiate with their own players any time they like.
3 .. Generally loyalty point & gun imports are stitched up before the deadline.
4 .. A player who is not sought to continue by his team, may be given access to other teams before the deadline, in a token of goodwill.
5 .. Rules state that they is to be no contact between any player & another team before the dead-line, unless the current team gives permission. ** cough **

The other side of the fence, is that a contracted player is not guaranteed a position, & can be sacked at any time.
I'm still not sure when the player points/worth gets worked out.

I was just looking at the Free Agent list and thought I would see if my'dream team' for the Wildcats (based upon contracted players) would fit under the points cap... amazingly it did.

C Alex Loughton (3)
PF Shawn Redhage (10)
SF Mark Worthington (10)
SG Import (10)
PG Import (10)

PG Brad Robbins (1)
SG Peter Crawford (9)
SF Jeff Dowdell (1)
PF Tom Garlepp (1)
C Paul Rogers (10)

Total 65

Negotiate Caporn's points down to 3 and release and resign him and there is our 68

Now I know this would never eventuate but it doesn't hurt me to dream

For the Breakers, the re-signing of Rick Rickert is a MUST. IMO Rickert is a better player than Kirk Penney, he is even good enough to play NBA ball, that's how good he is. He and ex-NBAer Monster Anstey were the only 2 players averaging a double-double per game this season. The Breakers virtually drops from a Top 4 team to the eighth team after he got injured and probably won't make the play-offs if not becoz Rickert's great efforts for them earlier this season.

On the other hand, Orien Greene needs to show the stuff that made him a more than 15mpg player in NBA now if he still wants to play NBL ball next season although I guess he is probably the one who has lost interest in our league. For Wayne Turner, he probably needs a strong season in the NZNBL to claim back his NBL contract. Just forget about Uncle Alston, he probably won't be good enough even for NZNBL.

Wildcats make a play for Worthington. I cant see him coming here. Plus he wouldnt deserve captaincy if he did come. That should go to Redhage when Rogers finishes up.

Also making a play for Johnson.

Wildcats woo Worthington

Perth Wildcats will consider Mark Worthington as their next skipper in an attempt to lure home the star Sydney Kings forward.

Leadership roles and promises at the Cats aren't worth much, ask Burston, Harvey and Ronaldson.
Wortho would be a great signing but can't see him as a Captain.
Have been told Fisher is def coaching (college?) in the States next year. All the family moving after the season.
A new coach would help chances of MW so any chance that Goooj and Wortho could move West?

Sure he can. he is actually a very good defender. Incredible fast hands, long limbs for blocking shots. He is easily good enough for NZNBL. Mate, I bagged the guy when he first arrived, but he has come right. He is very capable.
