Just wondering how many stats staff we have on the forum

I'm in my first season, having done a complete season of ABA (Central with Woodville Warriors), and getting appointed to the national panel and gaining my Level 2 accreditation.

Have put my hand up for Commonwealth Games selection, so hopefully I'll make the squad from SA, and make the trip to Nationals for selection in Septmeber.

Would be great to hear from fellow stats people (apart from Skindog who I already know)

Nationals are in August. May see you there as the Nationals are being used as a test event for scoretable officials.

I've always wondered about those stats guys....

Yogee, care to explain to someone who knows nothing about how the stats recording process works? Does one person look after a specific player or a specific stat eg rebounds etc....?

It really depends on what level you talk about

At ABA level, well here in SA (which operates on the national BA recognised system) you are meant to have 3 people on each stats bench.

There is the caller - who calls every action that occurs...ie Blue 45 makes a shot, passed to him by Blue 7, he makes the shot, and is fouled by Red 5, and goes to the line for 1 shot, which he misses, and is rebounded by Red 30.

The call by the caller would be "shot 45, made, assist 7, foul on red 5, blue 7 for one shot, missed, defensive 30"

The second person on the bench would be the operator/recorder, who is recording everything the caller calls, mainly these days on computer, using the CyberSports program (if anyone out there i still using manual stats feel free to add comment). The third person is the spotter, who is basically there to back up the caller (to cover things like blocks, assists etc), and also to note down any edits required (assists when the player fouled has 2 shots, still goes as an assist if the player was trying to get a shot off)

At national level, you will see 4 people on the bench, usually a second computer operator, which is a back up for the main computer, and in Adelaide we use that second computer as the webcast, running the live scores that you see on nbl.com.au

There are also circumstances where you can have 2 callers calling, one for each team, but I havent heard of anyone using that method in some time.

I got into stats after my knees decided I couldnt ref social anymore, and I love it.

This is my forth year and in my first year I got to be lead computer at the U18 nationals boys grand final at Knox in 2002.

i'm between level 1 and 2. Ive been evaluated I've just have to do the exam which I'll prob do next week. I'm part of the comm games squad with one of the lead up events the aba nationals last year, I was on the lead computer in
the mens grand final until it froze half way during the second quarter. Didn't get it back up until 30 seconds before the end of half time.

I will be down at the vbl tourny at Frankston next month and also at geelong in august.

I'd be interested on how you view the basketball game while your doing that job.

I've never done stats or ref, but I decided to get into coaching after a break from playing.

I've read in some places that referees tend to focus more on the negatives of the game, ie that was a foul, travel, goal tend etc.

I imagine that the main computer guy would hardly be able to look up at the action without missing a call. And the caller would be pretty busy trying to just not miss anything. Right?

Being fairly new to coaching, I tend to miss various things coaching. I tend to miss really obvious things that the opposition are doing, because I'm too focused on my own group. Just this weekend in a trial game, I thought we were getting trounced, only to look up and see we were only down by a few points.
