View Full Version : Do you remember these guys??????????
How many on here are old enough to remember some of these old NBL studs.............
Winston Crite- Only played one year i think for Brisbane=serious hops
Vince Hinchen- Played for several clubs, very talented and also sick hops.
Derek Rucker- Scoring machine at the point for the Bullets
Vince Kelley- Played for West Sydney Weststars...big time scorer.
Emery Atkinson- Cannons forward who also had ridiculous hops
Paul Stanley-Melbourne and Hobart Devils...Left handed dude who lit up the league for 2-3 years...seemed like he got 40 every night.
Jim Foster-Big dude who played with Coburg-Nth Melbourne..big scorer who had a soft touch around the hoop......

Never heard of this Rucker dude.............................
I saw Stanley put 38 pts on James Crawford in Perth in 1987. Crawford had 2-3 inches on Stanley with his leaping ability to boot. Stanley scored inside-outside...pump fakes, jumpers..every way you could. For some reason, that game sticks out in my mind most......He won the scoring title that year playing with Carfino in Hobart. He only played 3-4 seasons and then he disappeared. Nails....

Any memories/games of them stand out?Benny Lewis played with St Kilda as did Paul Kuiper. Lewis was a quick ankle breaking guard with a lightning quick pull up jumper and Kuiper was as big as we had back in the early 80s. Someone found him playing in the US and discovered he was an Aussie citizen so got him back here ASAP. Walked into the NBL and the Boomers team. Kuiper wasn't know for his speed and after a few NBL clubs, disappeared of the face of the earth. Herb was "the man" in the Canberra Cannons line up. Big scorer. Cant quite remember but he was known as the snake or the cobra due to his ability to weave between defenders and get baskets. Tad was a quick moving scoring guard until his knees let him down. Cut a career short, ending up with the Southern Melbourne Saints under coach Gary Fox before heading back to Canberra and retirement.

Mcheachin was a hell of a defender....he was a sneaky scorer but his B&B was defense. Atkinson played with Herb on that Cannons team and was a great athlete....ran and jumped well..good rebounder.

Vince Kelley went onto have a helluva career in the WASBL and I beleive he still resides in WA........other WA ozhoopers may remember Vince leading the Wanneroo Wolves to the SBL title back in 95 as player coach. His co-import was a guy called Brian Fundingsland who was a Point Guard who played a few games for the Wildcats as an import fill in for Ricky Grace in the mid 90's.
The Grand Final that year was between Cockburn and Wanneroo and it packed out Challenge Stadium to the rafters. I recall the best match up being between a Young Martin Catalini and Wanneroo's Richard Kevesich.....The Wildcats ended up making a choice between these two for a Wildcats roster spot and went with Cat....not a bad choice really.
Kelley really lit it up that year averaging well over 30 a game.....very hard player to forget as he could truely do it all.

Classic old school Wildcats:
Eric Watterson - we formed the Watto fan club in 1989 during the finals
Steve Davis - looked awkward but very effective
Jeff Allan - came in the same year as Ricky, left in same year though
Glenn & Brett Ellis - the other brothers
Alan Black as a player
Dan Hickert - big, challenged red head
Craig Evans - great guy, not the best player
Scott Fenton - RIP, biggest shock ever when he died - I had just spent a week with him on the Wildcats summer camp
Trevor Torrance - where is he now? another great guy

If I'm not mistaken, Thommo made it on to the court for the last 30 seconds and swished one from long range on the buzzer with his only shot. Not sure why he didn't get more court time on the day, as he was usually one of our guns. He suited up for the Wildcats a couple of times as an injury squad member, if my memory serves me right.

Tad Duffelmier - Was playing Div 2 in the same team as Herb*, but mostly gets around with a walking stick now. Does a lot of junior Div 1 coaching, has a son (Tad jnr) who rips up all competition while playing against the older age group.

Actually it's not like that at all. But thanks for your rambling diatribe.
How many NBL greats get honoured and remebered? Only hall of famers get the commentary gigs, others just get forgotten.
My point was people who excelled and acheived in our sport need to be recognised before those that didn't. Nothing more and nothing less. Making the NBL at all deserves recognision absolutely but not at the expense of people that were exceptional.

I didn't think I was doing that. My point was that is it better to suck at NBL level than be a star at State Level. Better to suck in the NBA than be an NBL MVP. At least you can say you made it to the top level which commands much more respect than smashing lower league level players. Why stick to dominating at a level you are good at, the only way to improve is play against people better than yourself.
I am rambling, but I am sure my point is understood.
The post was really started to remember the stars and the average guys as well. Paul Stanley, Herb Mceachin, were big stars in the league and Moose Robilliard, Tad Dufelmeir were role guys...who cares. They were all guys who played in the NBL when it was starting to boom.....

Paul Kuiper played for St Kilda/Westside Melbourne Saints in the mid 1980s. I forget the details but I think they found him in America with the intention of recruiting him as an import without knowing he was Australian. He then went to Perth in 1988?, after Cal Bruton had brought in Pinder and Crawford and the three of them were the original "Wall" - later it was of course Crawford, Fisher and Vlahov.
For some reason he was released/sacked during the 1989 season and he became the Gold Coast Rollers first signing for their inaugural 1990 season.
I have no idea when he left the Rollers or if he kept playing after that, but he did have a segment called Kuiper's Capers on the Channel 10 magazine basketball show in the mid 1990s.
He had some size and game. I am sure he played for the Boomers in the ill-fated 1986 worlds.

My first game of NBL I ever saw was a touring Hobart team (to New Zealand). it included an american called Ollie Johnston. 6 foot 9, pure muscle. I checked his stats the other day, averaged 30 points and 13 rebounds while in the league....
I only ever saw the guy play once, I was a prettty young fella, but he made an impression on me.
Does anyone remebmer this guy
I remember him. I think he was also a West Sydney Westars import alongside Vince Kelley. Damien Keogh and Robert Scrigni as well as Chuck Harmison were on that team and they went ok.

My fave player to watch: Mel "Mad Dog" Dalgleish, of the Frankston Bears, then Canberra Cannons. A true hard man who gave absolutely everything every time he stepped on court.
He was easily the best enforcer the league ever had - when he'd toss his false teeth to the team manager in transition you just _knew_ somebody was going to cop a belting (and that it would be face on instead of a cheap king hit)!

Ah this thread brings back some memories :D
I remember Friday scrimmages on court 1 down at Albert Part with all the imports and his dog showing up. We had Benny, Ray, RayRay, Bruce Palmer, Brian G, even Lindsay Gaze had the boots on, James, McDaniel, sometimes big Dean, Slush, and the list goes on...
Remember a big white dude called Tim Dillon who played with the Fish. They gave him a Gold credit card so he bought himself a nice sportscar and went for a drive up the east coast of Australia, during the season..
Remember all the jokes about Al Greens flat-top.. hahahaha.... to put the pot plants on... hahaha
Then there was Tiny Pinder... Hmmm...
Some other names from the past: Kent Lockhart, Mark Davis (Chairman of the boards), Wayne McDaniel, Emery Atkinson, Marc Ridlen, Brian Banks, Ian Davies, Doug Overton, Dwayne McClain, Andre LaFleur .....

The guy with the credit card woes was Jim Foster not Tim Dillon from what I can recall. He was also a big white guy who was not a bad player either.
Sometime around that era didn't the Saints have Kenny Payne and Greg Stokes who both played alongside Carfino at Iowa and I think both played in the NBA for some time. Payne blew his knee out from memory.

Correct it was Foster not Dillon. Dillon was a born again Christian and was about as straight as Foster was bent!! Foster was one crazy MF!!

What about Darryl Pace? Played in SBL with Redbacks but never got a chance to play NBL. I think the Wildcats did look at him but they already had their imports. Would have been OK at NBL level from what I saw of him.

You are right there. Probably the craziest MF to ever come out to Australia to play and there have been some strange dudes. Rumours persisted that Foster ended up in the Northern Territory as he could not return to the US but who knows.

As for those pick-up games at Albert Park, Ray Shirley. Wasn't there an incident where someone ended up on the wrong end of a blade?
If this never happened or was found by a court to have not happened then I withdraw my comments.

Ah guys, you are all taking me back to an NBL that I can relate to.
I'm gunna sit here with my 20c worth of chips (and way too many to eat by myself) and read this post again and again.
Being a Geelong boy, but having spent a bit of time in Sydney, some of these names are priceless. What about those Wednesday night VBL games at Albert Park, triple headers with virtual NBL teams for the crazy price of a couple of dollars. Wayne Burden at Frankston, Benny Lewis at Coburg, Cal Bruton at Geelong. Great matches each week.
Can anyone help with the name of a white PG who played for the Kings (may have even still been the Sonics). I think he was an ex-Celtics player. I thought it was son of Rick Barry. Would that be right?
Speaking of ex-Sonics, what about Brian Devenchensa, Ronnie Cavennal and Owen Wells. And Geelong players, Bobby Locke, Dane Surttle, Steve Kalochinski, Jim Town, Brian Banks, etc etc etc.

Aaww, that 1994 Dunk Comp. Leon Trimmingham, Mario Donaldson, Calvin Talford. Greatest travesty in the history of the NBL - if not the history of the entire sport of basketball - was that ridiculous woman awarding it to Brett Rainbow for, umm, nothing. It's all over youtube now. Great to watch.

Does anybody remember the short stint with the Sydney Kings(late nineties I think) by a guy called Matt Nover aka Ricky Roe from the movie Blue Chips?
I think he turned out to be a lemon. Must have been a case of life imitating art the way he was playing, and the Kings forgot the jim bag full of cash before he stepped out on the court. :P

Drew Barry (the Dean Waugh to Brent and Jon's Steve and Mark) made a short cameo with the Kings before being sacked for being rubbish and amazingly going straight from the NBL into the NBA, yet again proving that getting into the NBA is more about the right opportunity and who you know rather than how good you are.

Scooter (aka Richard) played 4 games for SE Melb in 1995.
Drew played 8 games for Sydney in 1999-00 and was indeed picked up by Golden State (if I remember correctly) the same week Sydney sacked him.

And I thought his (Rick Barry's) points were fair enough -- Drew was more of a distributor, a guy who looked to set teammates up, not an old-style NBL import who'd come in and give you 25 ppg while dunking on people (which was what the club and fans wanted). It's completely understandable that somebody who couldn't carry an NBL team's scoring load could get a spot at the end of an NBA roster as a reserve-reserve ball-handler -- it's a totally different skill-set.
Very true. It would be like if Dontaye Draper came out and tried to be a 25ppg man. Just not his thing.

I am sure some will remember when Tony Bennett (not the "I left my heart in San Fransico" singer) played along side Shane Heal in the Kings backcourt? Was it Alan Black or my boy BT coaching the Kings then? I think he only played like one regular season game? Hammer was never going to have another slow, small, shoot first import guard in the backcourt with him.
Bennett has went on to become a fairly, (sarcasim) sucessful US college coach. He also played 3 seasons with Charolette in the big show, when they were good with Zo, LJ and Mugsy.. He was a pure shooter and an overachiever. I thought he was pretty good with the Kings, but it was never going to work with him and Hammer in the same backcourt.

ANother two names that can't be forgotten is the two centres Chuck Kornagay and David Van Dyke.
Chuck Kornagay played for the bullets for one season before heading off to a Italian club. He was a force in the paint for the bullets and I don't think the bullets have had a big man to match kornagay since he left. I think he was there in 98? I thought he had the potential to be a NBA player as Ben Wallace type of interior defender but never ever made it.
David Van Dyke played for Newcastle in I think 95 before playing a season with the Wildcats. He had a great season with the Falcons was a quality shot bucker and rebounder who had a decent offensive game. He went to the perth Wildcats the next season where he never quite fitted in. In fact the wildcats looked better when he got injured mid season and he was replaced temporary by Marcus Banks? for 8 weeks. After that he left perth and was never seen in the league again.
