Great atmosphere tonight. Fantastic crowd for a Wednesday night with one NSW association clearly in their numbers with hordes of little girls running yelling and cheering for the Flames at the top of their voices. Flames played well and beat an AIS team that played with plenty of heart and gusto. Poto, her normal self, quite brilliant. I've worked out that she's a yeller but the team seems to have come to terms with that seeing as they didn't melt or capitulate. I think she just has a habit of making a strong point!!! :P

Other things from the game:
*Import Plumier- couldn't hit the side of a barn at the start then it just started to drop in the second quarter and she eventually played a nice game. I'm worried about her defense on the ball though. But played well.
*Afeaki- very very impresive. Seemed to have the AIS at will and here was the observation for those who have been calling for the screens- she set the majority of on-balls on POto and actually scored a fair bit of them on the dive to basket. She's defs a back to basket player who isn't going to get by anyone on foot speed alone.
*Gilbert was great value. She's hard on the ball that girl! Definitely a bonus signing and quite the re-discovered gem for Sydney.
*It was good to see another NSw junior make her debut- Kristen Barnes in number 24. She got on in the last 90 seconds but the crowd and virtually all the Sydney bench erupted when she made the free throws and scored her first WNBL points!!! :D That was defs a feel good moment for the group and everyone else in the stadium.

As for the AIS, they tried hard seeing as they were dwarfed by the Sydney team- they tried to utilise their speed and it worked in patches. Doesn't help when you have Liz Cambage and kate Oliver out. And LIz, I was in awe of her size and build, being the first time I've seen her in the flesh! This girl is built like a man, unlike most stick figure girls at her height. In that body is the future of australian womens basketball!!!

Another couple of interesting points, 1. No Rhonda Price and rachel Watman was on the bench out of uniform. Any ideas why?

With no Cambage in the middle, the AIS looked directionless. I think lack of talent in the guard spots is their biggest weakness - Ireland and Harrington ran around hard, but didn't appear to do much else. Jarry is a player, but she has to learn that holding does not equate to post defence.

As for the Afeaki screen thing, the screen would provide her more space to drive. It's easier to drive without a person draped over you initially.

Good to see Pluimer shooting well - more of that please. The Flames need all the long range shooters they can get. I'd like to see them run plays to get Molly Lewis free as she can seemingly shoot, but can't seem to get free a lot of the time. She is developing nicely in other areas though - impressed with her defence and court sense.

Favourite moment of the night has to be Sally Potocki's fifth "foul". The AIS player defending her fell over and got in the way of Potocki driving. Potocki was called for a charge. Hmmmm...
