View Full Version : Big V ruling - on-court shenanigans etc
Anyone else received via their club an email from the Big V over the last couple of days. I accidentally deleted it, but it was from Matt Cowling, basically saying (paraphrased):
"Over the past few weeks, I have seen 2 instances where an offensive player has bounced the ball off the head of an opponent, whilst remaining motionless, as a means of intimidating or faking out an opponent. Discussing this with referees we have decided that this constitutes an illegal initiation of contact, an unsportsmanlike gesture, and will be assessed with a technical foul".
Whilst I agree with the sentiments in the email (basically saying its not a good example for kids, unsportsmanlike etc) to some extent, I find it hard to believe that the wave of people bouncing balls off opponents heads has become so dramatic that it needs to be officially outlawed. Anyone else see the email or have any thoughts?
For coaches, what are your thoughts about on-court shenanigans? Not just this sort of thing, but trash-talking, dunking and then strutting, etc. Particularly outside the professional leagues. I can see how trash talking intimidates an opponent, I can see how a big dunk can inspire a team. In my opinion though there's always a fine line between making a point, and acting like a complete twat... and usually the coach is the best person to make that distinction (benching players, telling them off etc), it doesn't need a league ruling. I dunno though...
after a dunk or a big play, i dont mind seeing some celebrations if it becoz they are pumped up, not celebrating to show off..
trash talk... nothing wrong with it,

To dunk and then strutt is because you are pumped.
To trash talk is just that, talk.
To bounce a ball of a defensive players head is belittling that player and is unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Basically, if you don't see it in FIBA, NBL or NBA, don't do it here.
i love a bit of trash talk...

I think I know who'd be responsible for bouncing the ball off opponents' heads - one of Mike Santo's (Warragul Div 2 & AND1 mixtape tour) many signature "moves"...either that or he's taken on an apprentice :P

There is a player "out west" who has been accused of doing it twice in as many games.
In my opinion though there's always a fine line between making a point, and acting like a complete twat... and usually the coach is the best person to make that distinction (benching players, telling them off etc), it doesn't need a league ruling.
The player wasn't benched for the behaviour and I am pretty sure the refs didn't give him a tech either. Basically, the league wants it to stop and intervened to ensure the players, coaches and refs were all on the same page. It isn't a new rule. It is simply emphasising how an old rule is to interpreted.

Sorry,
If you are out of bounds and you throw it off someones back you land inside the court again you may do what ever.

It depends on context?
Throwing it off someone so that it goes out of court off them because (a) you are stuck or (b) you are falling out of court yourself is ok.
Throwing it off someone from the side/baseline to get it back is ok too (usually, the defender has his back to you?) (and normally you'd throw it off his arse where it'll bounce down low and not off his head where it could go anywhere?).
Deliberately throwing it at someone to be a smartarse is different.
Or deliberately throwing it at them because they're a smartarse is different too. I know that I got hit with the tech when I tried it! (But he was a mongrel and even guys on his team didn't like him :D )
(and he shut up after that too!)
trash talking can be ok (but I would bench my kids if they tried it) and there is a line. ... keep it game related!

Throwing at his head from on inbounds play could cause injury or temporary cluelessness which would give an unfair advantage to the offence. It would be the equivalent of doing a push-off to someone's head when leading for a pass. Unsportsmanlike foul.

Yes, that's another good reason for throwing it in off the arse TM.
