Hi all just thought i'd start a thread looking at new or potential teams that maybe looking at joining the WNBL in the near future...The reason why i've started this thread is because my home city of Cairns may have future plans of joining the WNBL once new basketball facilities (planned for the suburb of Edmonton) are developed.
I am currently not a fan of the WNBL but once Cairns gets a team i will definitely be supporting both the men and women's league.
Currently Cairns' NBL team is in a shaky financial position and may not be in the new NBL league next year (im hoping that we will be here next year, fingers crossed :D )...However who's to say that we cant have a WNBL team in the near future? Anyways here's the news clipping that appeared in The Cairns post recently...

Multi-sport facility chases state cash
The existence of a major indoor facility at the Edmonton sport precinct is one step closer after Cairns Basketball submitted plans for grant consideration last week.
Officilas submitted plans for a four court multi-sport indoor complez and adjoining PCYC to the State Goverment's major facility grant expression of interest round on Friday and will find out early next month whether they will be invited to submit full funding application.
With funding from the local and federal tiers of government already secure, Cairns Basketball president Denis donaghy said the organisation was hopeful the Queensland Government would come on board as well.
We're the eternal optimists" Donaghy said.
"We think we're going to get the fund and build the project"
Donaghy said the planning behind the profect and its joint nature had hin convinced it was a strong proposal for funding.
"A study of the needs for the southern corridor was received and the plan adopted by council(last year)" Donaghy said.
"In the run-up to the Federal election, we met with Jim Turnour and convinced him of the need and the feds have given us $1.5million.
"We met with council and they are convinced it is a priority"
Cairns Basketball would contribute the design and oversee the construction and management of the complex, sub-letting the PCYC Pulse club to the PCYC.
"There's no extra cost for council after the initial capital contribution" Donaghy said.
"We know in the past the state has indicated it likes to see partnership projects and i cant think of a better partnership than Cairns Basketball, The PCYC, coucnil, state and federal government".
If the submission passes the first round, a full application, including construction plans , quotes and tenders will be submitted by February and if that is successful, work will start in June, with completion expected in early 2010.
Baksetball will not be the only sport to benefit from the complex, with courts set up for netball, futsal, volleball and indoor hockey.
"All along it was our intention to create a mult-sport facility" Donaghy said.
"It was never our intention to just be there for basketball."
With massive population growth expected in the next 10 years, donaghy said the complex was a necessity and could also act as a model for future facilities.
WNBL push hinges on new court plan
SECURING a WNBL franchise for Cairns has been put on the backburner until a suitable facility can be built.
Cairns Basketball's plans for a four-court indoor sports complext at Walker RD, Edmonton - part of the Edmonton sports precinct include a show court with seating for 1000 to cater for hosting of national age championships and WNBL games.
The Cairns Basketball facility at Aumuller St does not comply with regulations for run off at the sides and ends of court and cannot be used for regular season NBL or WNBL games.
Building could start as soon as June on the Edmonton complex if a fudning application submitted to the state government last week is approved.
"Our priorities at Cairns Basketball are to get this (Edmonton) facility built and then to examine the viability of a WNBL franchise" president Denis Donaghy said.
Failure to gain state government funding to compliment local and federal government grants would mean WNBL plans would have to be reviewed.
The Edmonton courts will also be built to cater for elity netball standards to allow for a future national league team in the Far North.
"This facility will provide an alternative location that fits between the Smithfield complex and the convention centre in terms of size and quantity" Donaghy said.
Cairns Basketball will continue to work from its Aumuller St base when the Edmonton complex is complete, with an operations manager and possibly two support staff working from the new facility
