View Full Version : How do you handle a spanking?

We copped one today. One of the worst losses I've ever been associated with. Battle of 2 undefeated teams and the casual observer would have thought it was first v last. In the first half they couldn't miss and we couldn't throw it in the ocean. Down 55-12 at the half
We did make a game of it and actually won the second half......not that you get any points for that.
So how do you all react to this? Yell, scream, run em to death?????

Offence: PSread the floor, lots of movement, lots of spacing.. use the shotclock.....

if you have the ball wiht 5 seconds showing, drive...

Defence:
REBOUND REBOUND REBOUND.. nothign worse than getting spanked by 60 and playing some good d only to give up a piss weak fucking putback shot!!!!

Generally, on defence, get lots of talk, and good positioning...

try and play as smart as possible...

I think Pete was talking about dealing with the loss in the following week. During the game it's like watching a car crash, seems to go in slow motion and it's totally out of your hands.

I'd have a listen to Wayne Bennett in the interview after this game:
http://www.abc.net.au/sport/content/200504/s1342042.htm

Grandstand spoke with Brian Smith, Wayne Bennett, Corey Parker and Brad Thorn
Grandstand's Gerry Collins spoke with Brian Smith, Wayne Bennett, Corey Parker and Brad Thorn.

Sounds like it was mostly a mental thing, or just a bad day. I wouldn't read anything more into it. Focus on next week, showing up mentally.

I actually missed the game, my team was playing at the same time. I'm sure the next one will be close and I hope to catch it.

How do you handle it? Take it like a man, and then let the fire burn within your players throughout the next week until they match up against next week's unlucky opponents.... 8)

According to my trusty guide, you face a 1-3 Hills side next week CP -> they played @ Hornsby today, so I don't know the result, but I'd say your girls may well come out and give them a pasting....

If, of course, this does not work and you go down, then ranting may be required... :?

do you coach the 16W2?

It was a bit like a car crash. Really was one of those days. Their centre banking 3's,off balance rubbish being swished....same with heaves from 3pt territory with the shot clock going off. I really wish we had stats taken. At half time I can honestly only recall that they'd missed 4 shots in the half. We on the other hand only made 3 shots from the field

Anyway....I'm over it. Starting to plan for next time

Yeap. I assisted with the 16W1's last year and we had a very similar game, which just happened to be the elimination GF qualifier. They played the GF qualifier and elimination final on the same day, which didn't help.

It's times like these that you just remember the game's catch phases. "I love this game", "It's all fun" etc etc. ;)

If you had it taped then i would watch it with the players and analyise it. But DO NOT single a player out and tell them that what they did was bad, tell them how they can improve it and what would have been the better option. They alreay know what they did wasn't the smart thing and they do not want to be reminded.

Talk to the players and start off with the things they did cool and then tell them things that they can do better. talk to them as a team and if you want to address someone then don't make them feel like it was all their fault.

I wouldn't stress too much , i mean everyone has to lose at some point and if you win too much then you can get a big head from it. Use it to make your team better

A perfect example was our u/14 team who got smashed by melbourne in the state final then went to natinals and kicked them by 40 points to go on and win nationals. Both coaches are some of the best in Victoria but they both had the good and bad days.

Concentrate on defence at training, and doing the little things right. In my opinion, everything flows from your defence.

I also wouldn't go through too much the next time you train. Just highlight a couple of things and maybe even shorten the training. Just my opinion.

Stigma :)

Have great trainings this week, fun, hard work, make them really enjoyable!!!!

if the players remember a great week of training, and had a good time then they most likely will forget about getting spanked the other day!

Good call...

Whatever you do, don't punish them unless it's predetermined.

I opened this thread thinking "shouldnt this be in off-topic"

Alas, it's a different type of spanking!

Thanks for all your input. I've been around long enough to know how to handle it....was just interested to know what others did.

I'll just use my usual routine for when I'm not happy with the team. Defensive stance with a house brick in each hand for half an hour. Anyone drops their hands they all run 15 suicides straight

Stigma

House bricks? Try masonary blocks. Teaches them to palm the ball at the same time.

Maybe you should recruit the girl in Expertises' avatar. She can hit water if she fell out of a boat ...

Yeah......I was quite happy to get away with that one. This group dropped the same game up there the last 2 years. It's always tough playing against 12 up at Hills

From a not so Neutral stand point, the refereeing looked OK. There were some of the usual home team calls but overall it was a lot better than you see at other venues.

You're absolutely right.........the home team calls were much better than you see at most venues

The Hills girls played great though. I think they've underperformed this season. And when my lot went out 19-3 early they thought they'd done enough. As I said.....happy to come away with the win

At home......not that it helped. Still had the foul count go against us 25-15. But we got through it

We always have a worse foul count at home than we do away. Our refs seem to not want to be perceived as bias so they generally call it the other way

I'm not blaming anyone. Idiot.

Just stating an observation. We are still undefeated on our home floor this year.

Wow, good win. Hopefully it's just the wake up call the Bruins needed. I wouldn't be too unhappy about a loss now, rather than going into the finals undefeated.

Sounds like you were blaming the refs.

blame (blām) pronunciation
tr.v., blamed, blam·ing, blames.

1. To hold responsible.

Hold responsible for what!? Being undefeated at home!? All he did was make an observation, and I tend to agree that some associations are more inclined to slightly favor the away team. I think both Bankstown and Sutherland are probably that way.

Hogsbreath used the word "blame" - I was merely querying his statement.

Heh, go back and check, your browser probably has a handy "find on page" function.

At a rep level, there is a fair bit of pressure put on the referees by experienced coaches who know the rules. The coaches very often know the home referees personally.

So, two points:
* The referee, especially a junior is more likely to be intimidated by a visiting coach than someone they know.
* The home coach is probably less likely to tear a chunk out of one of their own referees.

You expect your kids to foul less on your home court? :?

This is what happens when one person is talking specifics and one is making sweeping generalisations. You weren't there and you have no idea how many 50/50 calls went against us. I don't recall blaming anyone...... I just said we got through it.
Of course you'll always stick up for the refs......I wouldn't expect you to do anything else. In my usual fashion I barely said a word to the officials(who are sisters in their late teens/early 20's that I've known since they were in primary school) and shook their hands and thanked them after the game.
We won.............I don't care what you think and what inferences you wanted to draw from my fairly innocuous reply to Skindog's question.....
