ok, im trying to work a formula for possesions (ex off reb, fouls , kick balls)

so basicly how many times you had the ball...
now the problem is, on a box score I cant tell how many times the FT was made on the back end....

the Formula I jsut came up with goes like this

Your Defensive Rebounds + Opponents Made FG + Opponents Made Ft (backend or single only) + Opponents Turnovers + 2(jump ball and 1/4 inbound etc) = Times you had the ball

So what i need is to make the FT more accurate as i cant read a box score and know how many were makes on back end..
waht I can do is look at each players ft attemps and make a rough esitmate
eg 8/8 ft = 4
2/5 = 1
3/4 = 2

generally people who miss ft's make more on the back end then the front end, so i can go thru each players and get a pretty good estimate..

any suggestions on a % i could use i.e
67% of Opposition Made Ft's

A widely used formula is
Your FG attemps + Ft attemps/2 + turnovers = Possesions

That tells me how many chances you had to score, not how much you had the ball (which means you cant get a indicator of speed)

A tip in is counted as a shot attempt but is it another possesion. Is an O rebound another possession or just a continuation???

that is a debate... is a offensive rebound a new possesion.. you have the ball again after you lost possesion(shot attempt) but the opposition never had possesion.. how can you gain possesion if you were the last team to have possesion.. its a good debate actually...

that is why i dont like using the 2nd formula and if i do, i often minus offensive rebounds if i want a indicator a game speed.. but if you want to know how many oppotunities a team ahd to score you would use the 2nd formula, if you wanted to know how many times a team had the ball (i.e the oppositon must have the ball b4 you can have another possesion) then you would use the first formula)

Example from our game on saturday

Formula 1 (Times we had the ball)
Your Defensive Rebounds + Opponents Made FG + Opponents Made Ft (backend or single only) + Opponents Turnovers + 2(jump ball and 1/4 inbound etc) = Times you had the ball

25 + 42 + 11 + 29 + 2 = 109 times we had the ball

Formula 2 (Oppotunites to score)

Your FG attemps + Ft attemps/2 + turnovers = Possesions
101 + 19* + 12 = 132 Scoring Oppotunites

Using formula 1 I can get accurate % of turnvoers, fouls etc

Using formula 2 I can get accurate readings on efficency

dean oliver (who is the man when it comes to analysis of bball stats) in the book "basketball on paper" uses

fga-oreb+turnovers+0.4xfta = team possessions

he went back over scoresheets to get that 0.4 fta figure

if you have an interest in the analysis of stats you should read the book, even though it can make your head hurt at times

Once you shoot, you lose possession? If the other team don't get possession, that's down to their poor D rebounding.

It's also why if your team fouls after you shoot, it's not an offensive foul but just a foul and the other team can get FTs if they're in the bonus.

IMO A Offensive rebound should not be regarded as a new possesion!
If your are fouled (while in possesion) then that should not be regarded as a new possesion.
A Kick ball Violation by the Defensive Team should not be regarded as a new possesion

If a tip goes in it is counted as an offensive board - shot attempted - shot made.
If a tip misses is it counted as an offensive board - shot attempted - shot missed?

possession - depends on the quantity, but provided it's the 1st time; a suspended sentence, life in indonesia

And here I was thinking you're comedy value disappeared after your first 2 or 3 posts. That is a fine return to form.
