Roughly every third/fourth login results in new posts being marked read after navigating away from the index.

this has always been an issue for me... maybe. i mean, even from the olden days. maybe it's standard practice?

The problem I'm having, is that if you go straight from a thread back to the index, it says there is a new post in that forum... there rarely is. After that, if you go back into that forum and then go back to the index, it's no longer orange. Weird.

Me too. It's like a stupid extra step that wasn't there before.

I just logged in but didn't have any posts as "unread"...

Nice to see that the pedants are still here..I meant that there should be unread posts but when you click into the forum they're all marked as unread.
