Basketball fans in the Wellington region will get to see the New Zealand Junior Tall Blacks in action as the team prepares for July’s FIBA U19 World Championship in Auckland.
The Junior Tall Blacks, coached by third-year coach Kenny McFadden, will play three games open to the public against Egypt and Lithuania at Porirua’s Te Rauparaha Arena, bringing a close to their month-long residential programme in the capital.
New Zealand will host FIBA Africa champions Egypt on back-to-back nights - Wednesday, June 24, and Thursday, June 25 - and FIBA Europe silver medalists Lithuania on Saturday, June 27, all games tipping-off at 7.30pm.
“These guys have been working real hard the last couple of weeks since we came together in Wellington for the residential programme,” said McFadden, in his third year as head coach.
“But we haven’t played together in a real game since we were in Melbourne in March, so it’s going to be good to get back on court against some opposition and see what we’ve got.
“Hopefully we can get a big crowd in Porirua, cheering and getting behind the boys, so they can get used to playing in front of a big loud New Zealand crowd before that first game at the world championship against Argentina.”
The Junior Tall Blacks also have a closed game scheduled with Lithuania on Sunday, June 28. They fly to Auckland later that day, with further preparation games against Puerto Rico and Syria on Monday, June 29, and Tuesday, June 30.
Egypt, who beat Angola for the FIBA Africa U18 title last October, arrive on June 23, while Lithuania, who lost to Greece in the European U18 Championship final last September, get to New Zealand on June 26.
The Junior Tall Blacks open their world championship campaign against FIBA Americas champions Argentina at the North Shore Events Centre, 8.30pm on Thursday, July 2.
Lithuania meet Puerto Rico in their tournament opener, while Egypt get France in their first game.

I'm really excited about this tournament, one because it'll be live on Sky Sport and two, I've had the privilege to play against a couple guys in the NZ U19s. So yeah, looking forward to having a watch. We probably won't do that good though..
