How is them signing a 33yo point guard to a 3 year deal bad for Mills? Bad would be signing a 20-25yo point guard with starting potential.
Nobody expected Mills to walk into a team, let alone starting spot. To me this presents a real opportunity to make the team and press some minutes against an aging point guard (by the time he's fit and paid his dues).
Besides, a 3 year deal means nothing to an individual team in a league with trades.

Miller is old, but he's certainly a capable starter and is actually coming off quite a strong campaign, despite his age. The Blazers' starter at PG last season, Steve Blake, would serve as a more than capable back-up and the Blazers are quite high on last year's 1st round pick Jeryd Bayless, who also plays the 1. So basically Mills has been pushed down the 'chain' as a result of this acquisition.
Of course, it's not a total surprise, the Blazers were known to be seeking a veteran PG, but it's just an additional obstacle for Mills to overcome if he wants to be on the roster. It's true that he could wow the coaching staff with his play at camps, but that's where his injury was very untimely.
The deal for Miller is only 2 years guarenteed and the third year is a team option, Steve Blake is in the final year of his contract and Bayless was being shopped for a Small Forward earlier in the off season.
Mills wasn't going to minutes this year anyway and was probably going to end up in Europe for a couple of years.
