ok, guy dunks the ball on break, hangs on hoop and swings back after dunking it ( as you should if you dont want to kill yourself).

but then he procedes to pull the ring down and then goes back up with it and hangs on some more before launching off the rim..

Nothing was called...

the dunk made it a 8 point game with 1.30 to go

A good referee will not want to reduce the spectacle of the game. However, there are three issues with letting a player to swing (not just hang) on the ring (in order of priority):
- The players' safety. If the backboard shatters, he is at risk of doing some serious damage to himself or other players. The referee has a duty of care to the players to take all reasonable action to prevent injury.
- It can be perceived as disresecting the opposition. Excessive grandstanding can often lead to the deterioration of the match. The referee has a responsibility to manage this aspect of the game.
- It is against the rules. The rules restrict players hanging on the ring, with the only exception being for the players' safety.

If the action as unnecessarily excessive, it should have been penalised. The game is about putting the ball in the hoop - leave the backward flips for the gymnasts.
