View Full Version : Defending the Isolation Play

Playing one of the top teams this Thursday and their game plan is based around their PG who is also the NZ U16s PG and is an extremely talented player.
Once his confidence is built up, he starts sinking shots from everywhere.
To get his confidence up, they run a simple isolation play to let him take his man one on one. Because of his incredibly quick first step, he gets around reasonably easily and gets the points.
Now my guards are good defenders and I know they'll make it hard, but it's going to be impossible to stop him based on good one on one.
At the moment, I'm thinking of having one of my guys ready to run across to take a charge or put up a block, or even double teaming the PG before the play is set up.
Sadly by rules we are limited to just man-to-man defense.
Are any of you guys familar with shutting down iso plays?

double and triple team the opposition's star player.
Hey it works
If he's big and shoots bad at the line I suggest: Hack a Shaq

What about if you run and jump full court, get the ball is out of his hands. Once the ball is out of his hands, deny him the ball. Try to run as much clock as possible.
Failing that, make sure your bigs hit him hard every time he steps in the lane. It worked for Detroit. :)

Tell your defender that the first time he shoots a jumpshot, he must slide his foot underneath the shooters, and he should roll his ankle quite nicely.

What the fuck is that, no one should teach there players that ever!
Just try to keep the ball out of his hands and on the inbound passes touble team him so they have to pass it to someone else!
one way is to put a shit load of rpessure on the offensive player, make him do something great to score or get a assist, hey if he does something great, he does something great, not many players can do that mcuh great stuff all the time though

Hit him hard and square in the nuts but make sure it is subtle.
Tthis move is a form of art, as it is important to have high impact on the nuts yet at the same time be as subtle as possible as you dont want the ref sending you out for whacking the guy on his frank and beans. I have learnt this art from many masters and have myself became a jedi-nutsmasher

Full court pressure, make him give the ball up.
Make him work on the defensive end!

I take exception to people following my post with progressively worse dirty tricks. Fouling someone hard if they drive into the lane is totally different than trying to injure, short or long term.
Fouling someone hard, and making them earn it from the foul line is a totally legitimate tactic. I'd never condone below the belt tactics, but you get 5 fouls in the game of basketball, and finishing the game with less than 4 could mean you weren't playing hard enough.

Is the kid good enough to beat your whole team single handedly?
I always like the strategy of making one star player try and beat a whole team. Make him work for everything and focus on denying the other 4 players.
As good as one player is on the iso, surely over a whole 40 minute game, a good team would prevail.
If his supporting cast is not too shabby, we'll then uh-oh.
Do you know what shots the 'star' doesn't like? Does he favour one side of the court over the other? Certain shots that he particularly doesn't like to take? Give 'em those.
Also, tell your best defensive player that this star kid will take his girlfriend if he scores close to fiddy on him. That should gee him up.

Can you say dropping over 50 points last week in a game that his team won 79-20 ?

This certainly seems like a very, very good suggestion. I think it could just about do the trick.

First name Poutu, second is Edwards I believe.
Just some games against Australian sides last year, possibly at Australian national championships which were his best games in terms of scoring. But at that level I suspect he does alot more driving and dishing, rather than being the number one offensive option that he is at the moment.
Beat Queensland North 107-54 (Thomas Eves 22, Peter Breen 20, Dion Prewster 18, Poutu Edwards 17)
Beat Tasmania 88-67 (Peter Breen 18, Thomas Eves 17, Poutu Edwards 13, Dion Prewster 11)

He plays for the Counties up in Auckland ay? I participated in a few games of pick up where he was involved and he was indeed a tough cover!! His jumper was streaky though and you could play off him a bit.

Just for the record, we had a one point loss.
Game was an extremely low scoring defensive monster, with both teams pulling out all stops. Lots of fouls.
Final score: 18-17
We did our job by putting them in foul trouble in the first half, putting on three quick fouls on them in the first two minutes. In the second, they did that to us and caught up big time.
We led for the entire game, until we got called for a technical, for supposedly leaving a fouled out player on the court. But if he was fouled out why would I as the coach leave him on? And wouldn't the referees tell him to go off?
On the last play we did our Reggie Miller play in which our guy was absolutely man handled, the ball rimmed back and forth and finally went in. We start celebrating thinking we'd have the chance to make the three-point play but there was no call.

Bad luck but it was a nice close game!
What are score normally cause 18-17 seem low scoring?
It is up to the Refs and the score bench to make sure he is off the court!

Scores usually in excess of 40 points per team, but with teams like us that like to run and gun, also with good players that can shoot well 60 plus is common.

I don't think i've ever been in a team where we didn't score more than 40ish every game haha :D
I remember 1 year we only score 1point in the first quarter and it was scored by a player that was filling in! That was just pre season tho and in the regular season we went 10 and 1 and won the GF! :P
