Hi Guys,
I have a six month old pair of Air One high tops and they have become prone to sliding rather than gripping while playing.
Any tips for increasing the grip of my boots or is it time to fork out the $$ and buy new ones?
Also, how often do people feel you should replace your boots? I play twice a week.

Courts are often dusty particularly if you play late on game night so it may not be your shoes. Throughout games I get my players to wipe across the soles of their shoes with the flat of their palms. It makes an amazing difference to grip, especially if their hands are slightly sweaty.
There's no hard rule of thumb as to when shoes should be replaced - durability depends on brand, design and how generally hard you are on shoes. of course your shoes will be crap in no time if you wear them on the streets as well as the courts.
What you can try is the chirp test, ie, jab your foot across the floor and see if your soles still squeak. If you can't make them chirp, replace. Also, look at whether the uppers are still rigid around the heel and supportive.

I bought a pair of Dunlop Gaze 3 months ago. 45 bucks from Target...can't beat those.
Those will do if you play twice a week mate

Wiping your feet on a dampened old towel also works well.

Nothing more annoying than having slippery shoes on the court!!!
Usually it is just the dusty court though. I get a new pair every 3 months just because i wear them all the time for trainings, games etc. and they just get worn out (and plus to keep in the fashion  )
Ummmmmm, hairspray on the bottom gets them awesome grip and works good for basically the whole game, our players usually just get some water and wipe their shoes and with their palm and just wipe em when they are on court. aussieBaller is right, the stuff works like a charm.

Have tried the water anb even spit but didnt seem to help too much.
I will try deoderant and see how that goes. If it doesn't work then I will have to buy some new ones. After six months the shoes still look great and it seems crazy to have to buy new ones but I will if I have to.
Thanks for the ideas guys!
Buy new court shoes if you have to and then you can wear your old shoes out on the street. :D

I always remember a very old and wise coach I had in my junior domestic days, back before the three point line was implimented and the shot clock was 30 seconds. So far back we didn't even have an NBL.
He said to go into the toilet take a leak in the urinal, splashing the step that you are supposed to stand on. Then walk in the puddle. Apparently the chemical makeup of the urine reacted with the pores in the rubber and caused them to become grippy.
I know it sounds rather unhygenic and it is near impossible for fmale players but it worked a treat. Maybe walking on a damp towell now days could achieve the same result without the heath implications of walking the urine out of the toilets on your shoes.
I'm not saying I recomend you do this, just that it's what we did back when "Chuck Taylor" hightops were all you could buy.

Maybe in the olde days it would work because the soles were made with real rubber so you got a favourable reaction. Now with synthetics, they would either melt or just smell

Anyway, getting back to slippery shoes, I have found that during winter when everyone walks through the stadiums with wet shoes, it leaves a film across the courts which makes it slippery. It looks like dust on the surface but once it drys you can't sweep it off. Maybe a combination of old shoes and this type of dirty court results in the slipperiness.

It's too expensive to fly me anywhere except SE Asia ;)
