LMSC's was lucky enough to travel with WA's WNBL team, the Perth Lynx, during their recent tour to Darwin, and what we found was a team of real superstars - but for all different reasons

While it does present the Lynx girls in a good light it also highlights the inequalities in Australian Basketball with Men getting paid not only at NBL but SEABL, ABA & State League level while Women in the WNBL are still expected to play "For the Love of It".

For Womens Basketball in Australia to be still reliant on Volunteer Players in the WNBL just shows to me the Administration is failing the players.

In Victoria, Country Football has linked into Netball so Clubs must also field Netball teams and the best bit - the Girls are often paid to play just like the footballers. Now that may not be the case at every Club but it's better than what many female basketballers are getting in the WNBL.

Netball's moved to a more professional model at the Top level and the sport will become more attractive for females to play if it continues grow.

Perhaps we should rename the competition the Womens Amateur Basketball League!

So you can only be good at something if you are paid to do it?

Good comment, however, the Perth Lynx are currently the only team in the WNBL that dones't have a full time program. All the other clubs (most under private ownership of sorts) have the money and support for full time programs with full time paid coaches and players - eg: their job is BBall. The Lynx girls are on the opposite side. No money, no full time program, and virtually a team of ametures player against teams (like Adelaide, Sydney & Bulleen) that have well paid full time players.

Does this limit which players in Perth a willing to play for the Lynx?

If the team is supported by the larger WA Associations in Perth such that each Lynx player works for an Association while playing for Lynx then I'm sure each Association could afford to pay these girls.

I'm sure the players are all linked to various WA Clubs already so is it a matter of getting these Clubs to work together.

And there is the challenge in itself.

The lack of funds does limit the total caption - not all wish to put their hands up without some reward, especially when their state league teams are paying them in some form.

The program as a whole is not well supported by the associations (outside looking in).

I guess from their perspective they look after their own patch. Some involved in the local associations/clubs do have support to the Lynx program but in general each association looks after their own and the Lynx is somewhat a challenge to that.

All very valid points which I agree with, however I have a thought that might just help.

How about when BWA are given leads for sponsorship, they follow up those leads, rather than sitting on their a$$es and not doing anything.

The way the club seems to be run is a joke beyond compare.

Take some of your own advice. The part of your post I was referring to was:

Have a nice weekend :D

WELL..... I must say I am rather excited to here the team (and hopefully our coverage) is generating such great passion!

First win tonight! Thank god for that. Next on the menu is a Dandenong victory (let's just forget about the Bulleen game proceeding)

I definitely think that these talented female athletes are never ever recognised enough for their hard work and passion. Yes some of the major teams can pay their main players more dollars than the Lynxgirls however it still isn't enough for them to make a living out of. Women's basketball needs more support from sponsors and Basketball Australia in building the profile and allowing these Women the lifestyle and pay packet they sincerely deserve.

Just read the article after attending my first ever Lynx game (vs Dandy). Its great that the players have a passion for basketball, despite the lack of money. I wish Ihad of read the article before the game. Oh well, love the underdog and hope the Lynx get some wins soon. They deserve it.
