Looks like this was a fairly common glitch (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?345842-3.8.5-Renders-Mark-Read-Script-useless.-*READ-ME-FOR-A-FIX*) with 3.8.5. I've put the fix in place, let's see how we go.
