Update on Cairns Marlins from today's Cairns Post:

http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2010/04/09/104791_local-sport-news.html

Marlins and Dolphins play preseason games against Townsville on Saturday as part of the North Queensland games, then scrimmages on Sunday.

Under 23 Marlins play Townsville on Saturday afternoon to decide on final Top of the North standings, currently tied at 1 all. Hopefully home court advantage will get Cairns through.

Expect to see some Under 23 Marlins playing for QBL Marlins - should be a great afternoon and evening of basketball!

Drew Phillips from the Brisbane Capitals has been playing well lately, averaging a solid 20 2 and 1 in limited minutes. He is a great young player and has only just turned 21. He is quite an athlete also. Keep an eye out for him!

They should come over here :)

Coming in to half way the men's standings are:

Rockhampton Rockets
Mackay Meteors
Northside Wizards
Gold Coast Goannas
South West Metro Pirates
Cairns Marlins
Townsville Heat
Bundaberg Bulls
Gladstone Power
Ipswich Force
Maroochydore Clippers
Caboolture Suns
Brisbane Capitals
Toowoomba Mountaineers

Top two teams with their NBL/ex NBL/imports players (Rockhampton - Kingma, McDade, Golson and Mackay - Fitzgerald, Coenraad, R Martin and Blanchfield) are getting it done.

Last season's winner, Cairns Marlins, struggling with lack of height but developing junior talent.

Caboolture Suns with Thalo Green and Brad WIlliamson underperforming.

Cairns a bit hit and miss this season so far with Kerry Williams back now and Jeromie Hill missing a couple of games. Definitely lacking in height though.

No chance at all, the Meteors won 3-0 easily. North Queensland teams, including the Mackay Meteors are again dominating the QBL this season, there's quite a gap between the 2 Queenslands.

The same for the Women's QBL.

Um, I discovered a very disturbing stat from one of the QBL women's games on the weekend in the game against the Northside Wizards and the Carins Dolphins.

Cairns hit just 3-34 three-point shots.
Northside went 0-38!

That's a combined 3-72 three pointers in the game! That is nothing short of atrocious! How do you even achieve that? You could blind-fold yourself and put up 70+ three point shots and still make more than 3. Wow.

"I might redo that a little for you joycefan, few guys out of place.

Might not be 100 percent accurate if there are players missing, but all coaches and players listed are at the correct teams.

Notable players eg Americans*, nbl/europe+ or ex nbl-, noteable locals.

Men
Mackay - One of the contenders this season, they play hard and have a great home court. Coached by Grant Kruger who we all expect to do a good job.
G Rhys Martin+, Deba George-.
F Tim Coenrad+, Peter Duck-.
C Michael Kingma+.

Gladstone - Coached by Blair Smith will be looking to build on the 33 percent win rate last year with a improved roster.
G Keith Borgan*[Metro State], Josh Gill-.
F Edin Zunic+.
C James Cripe*.

South West Metro - Unsure who coaches this team it was Stephen Black.
G Brendan Teys+, Nathan Niesler-, Heath Gameron.

C Steven Broom-.

Gold Coast - Coached by Blaze assistant Mick Conlon, look like the team with the best potential from the south.
G Adam Gibson+, Adam Darragh-
F David Gurney-, Scott McGregor-, Jason Aucoin.
C Jayden Tom+.

Caboolture - Unsure who coaches this team.
Have picked up Gianni from Maroochydore who is Canadian I believe, good player in this league.

Brisbane - Young team coached by long time Bullets assistant Dale Ryan.
G Mitchell McCarron[ais] - by far the most exciting prospect playing in the QBL.
F Tom Garleep+.

Northside - Long time coached by Paul Haly.
G Chris Goulding+, Shaun Gleeson+.

Maroochydore - Coached by Michael Van Dongen, again Clippers are young and local.
C Steven Wuadby+.

When does Weigh slot in to the Rocky roster?

Swish83

Anyone checked out Gladstone's QBL female roster? It's pretty much a WNBL team/Canberra Capitals (and a good one at that):

Natalie Hurst
Jess Bibby
Michele Cosier
Hannah Bowley
Rebecca Haynes
Amanda Beatson (on the Fire roster)
Diana Neves (was on the Logan roster until getting a gig in Portugal)

And 3 or 4 local girls.

Note: I do believe Cosier was only a 2 game fill in while Hurst was out, and had 2 very good games at that! Even without her though, that's still a stacked team.

The game on the weekend had Hurst, Bibby, Haynes, Beatson and a local playing the entire 1st and 2nd quarters. Player/Coach Bibby musn't like subbing.

This roster has been together for the last 2 QBL seaons (without Bowley, but with Katie Rose instead, who isn't in the line up this year) and won the last 2 QBL titles. They just dominate. It's not uncommon for Bibby and Hurst to shoot 40-50 field goals between them and play the full 40 minutes each. Whilst a regional association like Gladstone would be thrilled at having won the last 2 (and most likely 3) QBL titles, it really is at the expensive of breeding local talent. I'd be interested in the thoughts of anyone from Gladstone, or those who have an interest in QBL generally. Should there be a restirction on how many WNBL players can suit up? When Gladstone play Toowoobma this season, it could be a 100 point thrashing!!

Wanna talk about stars playing hard - Check out the Power women.
Jess Bibby scores 50 points, 6 rebounds [2off], 5 assists, 8 steals - was diving on the floor with the scoreline 40+.
Bec Haynes goes for 42 points, 26 rebounds [14off], 11 assists, 9 steals and a block.
Hannah Bowley scores 17 points, 8 rebounds [6off], 7 assists, 7 steals.

Anyone who wants to see some basketball being played the right way should come and check them out when they are in your town.

Check the QBL website for details.

I had stats like that once... for a season! WOW!

The Heat go away for the Bundaberg/Maroochydore double this weekend. Ya gotta love basketball if you are willing to travel like these State League guys.

We fly to brisbane Saturday, get in a minibus and drive 5hrs to Bundaberg, play them that night then wake up the next morning and drive to Maroochydore to play in the afternoon. Then we drive back to Brisbane and fly home.

Our last road double was leave Townsville 9pm Thursday night, drive 10hrs to Rocky, rest then drive 1hr to Gladstone for a game Friday night. Drive home that night to stay in Rocky. Play Rocky Saturday night, then drive back home, 10hrs, that night.

Ya gotta love it, lucky I do! :)

Player of the week for round 6 Jessica Bibby.

''For the third time this season the Women’s player of the Week Award is heading to Gladstone. This time the Powers inspirational Capitan/Coach Jessica Bibby is the recipient of the award. Bibby was at her point scoring best in Round 6, racking up 47 points @ 55.1% in the Powers win against the then second placed Force. The following day Bibby played the full 40 minutes again and finished with 26pts @ 40.7%, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal, as the Power were forced to work hard for their win against a determined Toowoomba side. After 6 Rounds of competition Bibby is the league’s leading point scorer averaging a phenomenal 34.9ppg, which is 6.8 points clear of her nearest rival. Jessica has been one of the most dominant players in the QBL over the past three seasons and 2011 is shaping up to be her most productive season to date.''

How do the finals work anyway??? I have no idea - and I cant find it on the QBL Website anywhere. I know it is a weird system but not sure exactly how it runs.

I think the top 4/5 teams are pretty close at them moment, Mackay & Rocky are both on 7 & 8 game winning streaks so I'm sure they think they can get to number 1 spot!

7 teams make finals.

Top of the League ladder goes straight to the semi final round as host of finals weekend.

Then the top 2 from each pool qualify for quarter final spots, 6 teams, 3 winners who then advance to the finals weekend.

Unsure who plays who but I gather top in Central pool plays 2nd in southern pool.
